I had a small grilse of 2 lbs on a silver stoat on the 6th sept, on the Inverurie beat. Also lost a larger fresh fish the same day, probably due to the small rise in water.
Also today saw a visitor to the Inverurie beat land a 4lb fresh grilse on a trout rod. One or two fish moving today but water back to summer level.
Incidentally, last week the Dee came up very quickly on Friday the 15th in the early morning according to SEPA. I witnessed the Don rising very quickly at about 4pm on Saturday 16th. The Don seems to take 12 to 24 hours longer than the Dee to show a rise. Has anyone else observed this fact ?

Time to start up an old thread Had a nice brace of fresh fish from the Manse Pool this morning. The Manse Pool is part of the ADAA waters. Both taken on a size 8 double copper-bodied Willie Gunn. Unfortunately, my photographer was still at home sleeping when this one took hold so only a quick pic Eventually landed and released a fresh 7lb fish. Ten minutes later, I was in again. This was a slightly heavier fish but stayed deep in the pool rug-rug-rugging. Fished another couple of hours without seeing anything else. Water level was fine - perhaps a little coloured - and the weather overcast. Set-up was Loop 13' 2" Blueline, Snowbee floating SH with 5' intermediate tip, copper-bodied WG on the point with a size 7 Ness C on the dropper. Took this photo from the head of Cocker's Pool I told the guy, "Try something with a bit of purple in it". Didn't realize he'd use Ribena ;D

Bonnie fish , Sloggi. Glad to see you're not afraid to take one for the table. Regards. Cheers guys As a rule I don't take fish before June, but will take the odd one where permitted. The line/lure attached to the wires looked funny but, of course, it's not a good sight - not sure why the ribena bottle is attached? A vain attempt at getting the lure back?

Yes, I've fished it once. Lovely beat with some smashing fly water. Banks are cut like a golf course No need for a long rod. 13' will be fine. If windy, take 15' as you're fishng from the bank - little wading required. Small gold bodied flies did the biz for us. Fish are likely to be coloured. May/June sees fresher fish. Beware The fishing has been very slow on the Don this year. If I was to choose a Don beat to fish now, I'd go to Fetternear. However, Arduncart is very pleasant place to be and fish (if you find it ).

Worth a go up their just now needs water to fish so go soon, cheap fishing for a lovely beat. Fetternear is also worth a cast but i have found it fishes better in lower water, fish tend not to hang around in bigger conditions. Pm me if you need contact details or directions for Ardhuncart.

As a member of the Brechin AC I can use the exchange ticket for ADAA fishings on the Don. (Probably the only member that uses it) In the past I've had success at Kemnay but always with decent water heights. What would the fishing be like (late October) if the water stays low? I'm fishing the WestWater/Esks for the last 10 days of Oct and usually have a day or 2 on the Don. In particular, I'm thinking about the Upper and Lower Chapel pools.

R.E. the shrimp/prawn rig for those who are curious.Shrimp/prawn fixed to shrimp pin, hook and stout line then fixed to floating plastic drinks bottle lobbed into pool and left to fish itself while "Angler" loiters with intent close by.Salar grabs hold and hooks itself against the bottles buoyancy, panics and swims about bottle in tow until it eventually tires against the bottle, when it will then swim into the edge /slacker water for a rest."Angler" then retrieves plastic bottle rig with attending rig and beats a hasty retreat. Its not unusual for the skilled "Angler" to have several bottles on the go at once.Fishing this way is a favorite method on the Moys Ridge pool when the tide is on.

Hi Greenalert,
Like you i've never fished it - but I suspect bottles of ribena are a no no.
I must say - that's a new one on me - just thought a couple of kids had tossed a bottle and string up over the wires - quite incredible.
Altmor.
