Hi all, next month, Oct. 9th and 10th I will fish the river Annan, Dryfeholm and Hoddom are the beats. Anyone with hints and tips? Do's and don'ts? flies etc. I am a fairly experienced salmon angler, mostly Norway, but this is my maiden-trip to the Annan.... Many thanks in advance. Hans.

If fishing Hoddom, try to arrange an early start as the beat get's busy.

early and late is my advice!! the local pubs are geat but first light on the bank can be more rewarding. and last 2hrs can be deadly! my own personal veiw on the annan is fish push up just before dark giving you a new chance of fish before they settle in a pool. i will keep my fingers crossed for u that the annan sees lots of rain before you visit

I have said before in a previous post the Annan is not a deep river all you will need is a floater or intermediate and around size 8 cascades or ally shrimp type patterns. Hoddom has a lot of good fly water and while it gets busy there are plenty of pools. What you really want is for the river to be around 2' at Brydekirk. The Annan can run big and dirty for days if you get too much rain. Keep your fingers crossed for the right height and I'm sure you will get salmon. I'm fishing the week of the 16th Oct and if the river is between 2' and 3' I will catch salmon. Good Luck

Keep it simple, don't go thinking all you will require is a floating line though,Hoddom waters can run deep and fast, take a range of sinking polly's coupled with big fluff, yellow, red, all the usual season end patterns and colors.
The road bridge at Hoddom is marked for spinning only above X height, the day before you go give Diikkii Graham a call, try to confirm an early start and ask how the previous week has been fishing, fish caught, where,on what, the usual Q's.
I hope you enjoy your day,
1066. :)

was tipping it down here today.so river might be high, the pool at the milk junction is good but the milk can colour the river up ,100yrd downstream where the river takes a wee kink to the left is a good holding pool,

Fished down at newbie on Saturday, cracking fly height, got lucky and managed to get 3 up at the island pool ;D 2 of which were clean fish. No monsters (biggest around 8lb) There has been some late teens caught and some big fish moving through though. The river will be at a good height for the start of the week and with a bit more rain about continue to fish well I have booked a day on Cleughead for next monday, I have never fished there before. Has anybody fished there? Any tips, advice, etc grateful ;)s Macsalmo

Fished hoddom today ,water at lovely height for fly (below spinning mark),fished through goats in morning saw nothing touched nothing ,But in the afternoon i fished down from the milk and had a nice 8lb fish just at the overhead wires ;D.Interestingly speaking to someone later they were telling me that at around the same time that i caught my fish (2.30 approx) three other fish were taken at or near goats pool. I dont think there had been any fish caught until this time despite these pools being well covered by several rods .What had changed ?

Did the salmon have sea lice ? What time was high tide ? Hoddom can only be around a 1 - 2 hour travelling time for a salmon. Looks like a run of fish from a high tide coming through the beat.

Interestingly my first two fish came between 2 and 3 o'clock. My first was coloured and my second was clean but with no sea lice. They all were caught on a snowbee 2D sinktip with an 1.5" cascade cone head on a plastic tube (Alan). Salmonscotty16lb, I booked Cleughead through the fishscotland website, there were quite a few days left for the last couple of months (but this was back in July) I wish I'd have booked a few more as its hard to get on newbie now Does anybody know about Brocklerigg ? It looks ok . Macsalmo
