I am looking at buying a light line rod (7/8/9) for summer fishing in low water on a river (the lower Wye) that has some fairly smooth glassy pools. Can anyone recommend a suitable but cheap (sub £200) light line DH rod? I have a 15` Norway 9/10 which I fish with a 10/11 in Spring and Autumn but I want something for the summer.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

AR, For some reason, long and light rods aren't all that easy to find in this country. I suppose this sort of application is considered a bit of a niche market, although there are several rods of this sort available from US manufacturers.
I have an older model B&W Powerlite 'Walker' 15', rated 7-10, which is my weapon of choice for summer on the lower Wye. It will throw a Wulff TT #7 spey line overhead, but I find I need to have all of the belly outside the rod tip before it loads up with a spey cast (although in fact I tend not to speycast there if possible, to avoid water disturbance). I would say it's realistically an 8-9 rod, though fished with someone last year who was using a DT10 or 11 sinker on his! They turn up 2nd hand from time to time, and should certainly be under £200.
I suspect you probably don't need a 15' rod there; certainly there are few pools on the beat I fish where you need to cast 30yds. I just happen to prefer the extra length. You might consider the B&W Norway 13' 7-9 as an alternative, (and again you might get one at under £200) although personally I think that might be going a bit too short.

Thanks Charlie and TA (Dave?). Looks like just what I need.
Charlie, let me know when you are down on the Wye and I'll see if I can't arrange my plans so as to meet.

AR, will certainly do so. I didn't manage to wet a line in the Wye last year at all - somehow the year seemed to disappear and apart from a visit early in the season, when the river was in dirty flood (and I wasn't planning to fish anyway), I wasn't down that way at all in 2005. Will certainly try to do better this year!
Have you got any dates definitely booked yet, or are you going to wait until nearer the time, depending on the state of the water?

Charlie, I had only 3 trips last year which, given that I live 40 minutes away, is pretty pathetic. I tend to book last minute depending upon tides (which can wipe out the fishing for half a day on some of the Bigsweir beats) and water conditions. Still, let me know and I will try and make it.
Best wishes.
