In preparation for the start of the season I am about to order some flies. I already have a fair number (although some topping up is required plus the addition of some new patterns). I bought most of my current stock at the start of last (my first) season - most of these are trebles.I must say I am not really all that happy about continuing to use these as since most of the fish I catch will be returned as I feel that the trebles may cause the fish more damage and cause more stress as they are likely to be more difficult to remove. Does this make any sense or am I being stupid about this?

As usual Graham has nailed it. I too am a convert and very seldom use trebles unless I cannot find a double in the size pattern I need.

I would like to apply this to tubes as well.If so what size/make/type of double should I be buying for this? Is it possible to use the same size hook for all tubes (tiny ones excepted of course). I had intended to buy 1",1.25" and 1.5" tubes in aluminium and copper following Graham's advice to someone fishing Tweed in April in another post.

Thanks Graham. I'll get on with ordering now. I want to concentrate on just a few flies this year and, following your advice on other posts here and on the other site, I thought Cascade , Ally's Shrimp, Munro Killer sizes 6-12 Silver Stoat sizes 8-12 -all doubles of course plus assorted coloured tubes in sizes from 3/4" to 1.5" in copper and aluminium with 6and 8 Loop doubles. As I will be fishing the Teith and Tweed throughout the season is there anything I should alter or add to my list?

hi,
getting back to doubles - how do you usually fish them with tubes, is the hook upside down (points directed to heaven, to reduce snagging) or placed the usual way? does it really make any difference regarding hooking rate and/or fly losing rate? i have really got fond of tube flies and now need to figure out the 'correct' way of fishing them.

Malcolm - Humblest apologies but I typed "assorted colours" to save me typing my whole list of tubes which are:- Willie Gunn Gold Willie Gunn Black Yellow and Gold Orange Yellow and Gold As you can see I have placed you at the head of the list!. The only other serious competitor fly (would be 1st equal) would be a "Graham Ritchie" but I don't think that exists (yet!)!! In the light of my grovelling maybe you could reconsider your withdrawal of assistance? Quite seriously tho' I think I have learned more from you and Graham over the last 12 months than I have from all the books I have read and I'm sure that I'm not the only one. Jim
Lauri - Sorry I don't know the answer to your question but the great thing about this forum is the willingness of the experts to share their knowledge - so its just a matter of time before someone answers your question (I'd like to know the answer too!)

Sorry folks,
I know this thread burnt out a while ago, but I could not help adding another couple of double hook types into the pot. A good angler put me on to them a couple of seasons ago. They are the Partridge HND (heavy nymph double) and Big Mouth Double. These are half the price of any salmon specific hook, and definitely compare with the Loop doubles.
They have landed fish to 18lb that I know of with no bends or breakages.
