Just acquired a No1 and No 3 Marquis (my 11/12 Ian Gordon Floater is a too bulky for my No2 -thats my excuse anyway!!) To save me finding out by trial and error can anybody tell me how much 30lb backing these take?
The number 1 will have an 8/9 Spey floater The number 3 will have an 11/12 Ian Gordon Spey Line.

Thanks Graham - I'll buy a large spool of backing and do that.

Graham - why is a reel loaded to within 1/8 " of the rim "correctly" loaded?

Thanks Graham - I get that. One of my reels I loaded with Cortland Microlite backing and with 150 yds on the line is 1" below the rim I'll need to see to that but more concerning is the fact that somebody said to me that these very fine backings can ruin the rings by cutting into them. Is there any substance in that do you think?

From what you say it seems that retrieval rate is the main determinant of how much backing to put on a reel. With regard to the backing the fish actually need Falkus etc. suggest 100-150 yards is all that is required- is that your view also?
