The trend at the moment seems to be for shooting running line behind a spey profile head. I dont particularly like handling and shooting thin running line, especially when standing in a strong flow. Apart from the old double taper, is there any alternative line profile available?.

Hmmm - not really. There is the weight forward, but Spey lines are essentially just a derivative of the WF..... the Wulff lines are out as they are a WF so the answer is no - unless you find a new in box level line? I think that's it.

Not a lot wrong with a DT ,fished one on my few days on speyside early spring and was getting tge distance I wanted ,possibly a bit more effert but only tactical retrival of line . Not to say that I dont like the modern tapers as well !

The Ian Gordon lines have decent running line. In fact the ones I have that don't are Snowbees

Its not always about distance, a lot of my fishing is at 20 or 25 yards and consists of roll casting under trees and bushes as well as Spey casting. At other times I will be trying for distance so a line has to be a compromise or I carry a spare spool and change lines. I have an early Mastery Spey with a 77' head but struggle to achieve a good turnover or any distance. For most of my fishing I opt for a DT 10 but this is past its best now. I have considered the 65' Ian Gordon but they seem to be in short supply at the moment.

Springer,
Thanks Springer.
It makes sense and you have answered a lot of my other queries about the IG lines. The idea of a modern improved double taper is what I had in mind. I like the sound of the SA XLT. I will have a chance to borrow an IG in a couple of weeks time so will be able to compare it with my Mastery and DT lines before making a decision. Enjoy your nap.

With the rider that the IG lines are rare as rocking horse shit at the moment, I've had one on order for 6 weeks and it will be with me, mid to late June!
I think Partridge surprised themselves by producing something that was far more popular than they thought.
