"Modern Hardy's are overpriced and naff. confirmed when a salesman at farlows advised that the angel was for people who like to be seen; just like a ferrari owner."
Think that's a bit harsh. I find the drag on the Angel excellent.
I agree that the Danielsson is good but don't like the silent drag. The first time I played a big fish on my HD 11/14 I had my knuckles thoroughly rattled when the fish ran faster than I thought (no sound to warn me).

''Wouldn't touch a lamson with a bargepole after watching a fish of a lifetime ping 25lbs seaguar like cotton when the drag seized''
Personally, I have never had, or heard of a Lamson drag seizing, their simplicity and low maintenance system alleviates that eventuallity.
Perhaps there is a possibility of a little misuse??

Jim the drag on a danilesson is not silent but it can be made to be by winding out the small grub screw on the side of the central locking nut used to change the spool. If you want a louder click just wind it in a few turns. On to the Lamson reel, I know the person who lost the big fish and the reel was like new to look at and had only been used 12 times max so miss use is out of the question. The drag failed because of a sub standard bearing which had corroded. Value for money? ?

Thanks Wilbert. I should have said "near" silent. Maybe I've done too much shooting without ear defenders.
I have the screw in as far as it will go but I just wish it was noisier.

Perhaps there is a possibility of a little misuse?? no misuse there at all - the reel was fairly new, albeit not used for a few months. the verdict was that the steel ball bearings had rusted up, hence the seizure. not too clever using parts in a reel that are prone to rusting! the other problem with that particular reel was its propensity for the foot to come loose. also annoying. my dislike from modern hardy's stems from the MLAs which I bought. they just had to look at a piece of grit for the rachet to jam and send the reel into freespool. again, you don't want that to happen when there's a fish of a lifetime of the end. my point is that the danielssons are tried and tested and proved themselves in the harshest of conditions. not many other reels can lay claim to that

What is these days?? Years of under investment and a succession of governments that don't give a fu*k about manufacturing its no wonder that its a rare sight these days to see a Made in Britain badge on anything.

After my Angel went wrong again Hardy have agreed to upgrade it at a cost of £120 to a Cascapedia which I now have. It is a pretty reel and looking at the design it should be a bit more knock proof.. I hope for some reliable use. I would still fish the Danielsson anywhere I thought I might hook the fish of a lifetime though..

The hardy angel is a stunning reel to look at,but everyone ive seen with one all had problems with them.I even know one man who had to send his angel back twice, so its not saying much for this type of reel. The reel that i would tell you to get is the Shakespeare Pflueger President 11/12.I own one myself and there absolute cracking reels, you can put on any amount of line, they have a very good drag and the best thing they retail at £100 quid .You cant beat it, a hell of alot cheaper than the angel. themoygreen

I agree the President is a cracking reel for the money. Superb drag, light and with the 11/12 coming in between£90- £80 brilliant value. I got the 11/12 + a spare spool with IG line fitted with backing and loops for just £139
