Although I've heard of them I've never actually encountered one on the river bank. I'll look out for one. Are they all large arbour?

This is the one for me, direct drive though, not the anti-reverse. None of the drillings to let all the grit and dirt into the drag. Balances the rod just right and will last into retirement and beyond! Tarpon and Marlin models are just the job...! img440.imageshack.us/my.php?image=14580billypatevx3.jpgInterestingly, and I concede its probably different for salmon fishing, but a lot of salthingyer guys I fish with prefer the drilled back Abel and Tibor reel models as they feel its easy to rinse away any grit and sand that gets in. With the closed back they reckon that anything that does get in stays in ! I have both types and have never had a problem with either but it makes you think

The Billy Pates have a good reputation but I wouldn't put anything that ugly on my rod ever.
Re. Ultimate reels, they have to be able to sing when the fish runs as well as be good looking and practical, so Hardy Cascapedia MKII or Loop Classic.

If were talking ugly, then the Loop Opti Megaloop is top of the tree.
Small child's bicycle wheel.............plug ugly is paying it a compliment!
