Ok let's see who are the fans of big heavy reels, and who prefer this modern obsession with making drilled out chicken wire origami.
Have I just given away my preference?
So what do you run and why?

The big Perfects are beautiful pieces of engineering, on my old Hardy deluxe it balanced the outfit well, but on my sage the Perfect makes the outfit feel awkward and unwieldy.
So I'm in the modern reel "drilled out chicken wire origami" camp.

I don't like the look of most modern large arbour reels, and it's interesting how often we all check to make sure there is enough room to get a modern spey line on. Funnily enough the old fashioned reels have plenty of room!
As sagecaster has already alluded to alot of the chioce boils down to balance.

it all depends on the weight of your rod my main rod is a sage euro 14 ft so my sharps is to heavy , so i pop the snowbee xs on , it is so important to have a balanced set up , improves casting , and comfort

J W Young 1540s for me, love the sound. Appart from the pawls wearing Iv'e never had any problems with the reel. Also have 3 of the Jubilee series, nice yes, expensive yes, but hasn't got the sound.

The Ari T Hart "The Tweed" embraces both camps. A modern, fresh look in a traditional reel (ie no large arbour) and significant weight to properly balance bigger rods. It has a great drag too but is almost to nice to fish with....

Like you Splash I'm not a fan of large arbor but I recognise that is just a personal preference suited only to my tastes. However - to my mind the big heavy reel balanced the big heavy rod - and thankfully I live in an age where I can choose to fish with neither.
P.A.T.

Sorry if I've caused any confusion PAT, I am very much a fan of large arbour reels using the Vosseler S3 and Lamson Litespeed LS4 as my stock in trade weapons along with various Abels etc. The point I was trying to make was the Ari T Hart reel is a good compromise when used to balance some of the longer carbon rods out there such as my 16ft Loop Grey line and helps shift the balance point to the correct place for comfortable fishing. I'm completely with you when it comes to comfort and lightness which is why I have found the 14ft 8 9/10MF Le Cie something of a revelation this year
