Yes, once you get onto a big open river there is usually little point persisting with a DT line as it will invariably just waste more of your energy, may as well just get a spey line with 25 yard head.
Years ago I tried to get a manufacturer interested in fly lines made with a tapered core and then the PVC coating applied over this, they weren't interested because they thought their tapering of lines through the use of a coating couldn't be bettered-I doubt any of them had even cast a silk line to realise the errors of their ways. An angler told me of a spey line he'd seen that had been damaged a few years ago (he didn't know manufacturer), had a slightly thicker core than at the tip so I think some company has used its nonce. The principal behind the idea was to create a line with more efficient energy transmission, as in a silk fly line.
If anyone knows of a spey line that has a tapered core I'd be interested to hear about it.

Best line I bought this year was a Sewincaster line from Wellard and Scott.

has to be the Monteith - has improved my casting and the enjoyment of my fishing in leaps and bounds with less than a handful of outings using it. Will be in full flow with it next year..!

The results All with an honourable mention in dispatches with one vote:
Snowbee 2D Spey line.
Partridge Ian Gordon Spey.
Guideline s1/s2.
Carron 85'10/11 F..
Airflo multi- tips .
John Norris Spey .
Loop Classic Spey.
The Jock Monteith full floater.
Upping the ante with 2 votes:
Carron intermediate .
And even higher
The Hardy Mach 2 on 3 votes
And the winner (cue drum roll and scroll down)
No surprises here.
The. Jock Monteith multitips with 9 votes. If I've done my sums correctly 23 votes were cast. The obvious conclusion here is that SFF members like multi tips lines (put that axe down willie gunn, you'll hurt yourself )and there in a strong view that the JM is The One.
Thanks to everyone who joined in.
regards
Lamson

This is really great and delighted that so many of the team like the Monteith multi system and that its won this 'Fly line of the year'. Since the first production run last September (after 2 years of prototyping) close on 500 have found homes without involving shops or having any form of marketing money to build brand awareness. So basically this good start has been solely performance/product driven. This surge of sales is now allowing me to develop my spey rods and having the multi system produced in 9/10 and maybe 8/9 weight too (probably need to shorten tapers/belly lengths for an 8/9). So once again many thanks for all who have helped here and please know that if your in Birnam there's a large dram waiting for you in the fishing hut on the proviso that you give me at least 30 seconds notice !!!!!!! Very Best Regards Jock Monteith

Well done Jock
Do you have a try before you buy option, (not the line pool as it has moved)
Are there any Ness fishers amongst your buyers perhaps I would know them and could get a shot of one. :-)

My rods are mainly for 9/10 and 10/11 lines. I find that the Carron suits virtually every rod I have, the Snowbee 3D likewise but it is more rod dependant and the CND GP lines are also excellent - especially if you want to use long tips. I also have a Monteith and this I think has a lot of promise...I have not had it long enough to match its many variations to any rod. I used it only with a CND Salar 15'6" with which, in floating form, it was very very good.
If I had to chose a single floating line it would be a Carron. On the assumption that the intermediates and sinkers are true to type, then the brand would be my favourite. If I had to choose a multi-purpose line it would be a toss-up between the CND and the Monteith.
