Cheers,Mike. The 5550 or 6500 C3 is a good allround model. Personally I like the 5600C5 MAG X which has an ajustable magnetic brake in addition to the usual toys. You can pick up a new or virtually unused model of eBay very cheaply, particularly from the US. I tend to use mine for pike or saltwater fishing rather than salmon but these models would certainly fit the bill

Cheers,Mike. I have an Abu Ambassador 6500CS (left hand wind). Abu Ambassadors set the bench mark for freshwater multipliers and a standard 6500C right or left hand wind will set you back circa £100. I only have limited experince of Shakey and Penn (saltw*ter stuff and very expensive) - can't say anything bad about them, but don't have enough experience with them to recommend I don't know how familiar you are casting/fishing with multiplier reels. If you are, no point reading beyond here. If by chance not, you might like to consider the following. Comparing them with a good quality fixed spool like a top end Shimano (approx same price point), there are only a limited number of circumstances when a multiplier is any real advantage, quite a few more where it is a distinct disadvantage....oh and then there are the as you deal with all the over-runs while learning how to cast with light braking. Good luck CLaG

Good luck CLaG If you go for a model such as the 5600 MAG X which has a combination of centrifugal and magnetic breaking systems, the overruns can be minimised. As someone who grew up casting 6-8oz weights on a Michell 602AP (remember them) which had a pretty rudimentary centrifugal brake, I find modern day multipliers a joy to use but I concede CLaG's point that they probably don't offer any real benefits over a modern baitrunner type fixed spool until you get into that 40lber in a big flow Incidentally what happened to the Diawa Millionaire reels. These were aimed as Ambassadeur challengers in the late 70's; are they still around?

What's really interesting is that you can pick up a brand new 5500 or 6500 series for under £40 on eBay which is not much more than they cost 30 years ago - amazing ! If only all fishing tackle was inflation proofed this way
