I fished Kharlovka the week before last. We arrived to some pretty bad fishing weather- Bright sun and heat interspersed by heavy rain, then bright sun again. The fishing was relatively difficult for Russia, and I had a couple of blank days, not something you expect in the late summer on Kharlovka. Despite that, it was a great week, and I finished with 14 fish including 21 and 23lbers. A friend of mine had a sea-liced 35lber from Kharlovka falls on the Thursday and we celebrated very thoroughly on the Thursday evening, resulting in fairly light fishing effort for me on Friday, the last day. We were fishing the bottom beat on the Kharlovka and I had one grilse in the morning. We worked our way up river through the day to Barrel Pool, where I lost one fish before I had a fantastic, drag screaming take. The fish went ballistic and made long, fast runs down the pool, then turned and bolted up river, with my line tearing through the water to keep up- Great stuff. After fifteen minutes or so I landed not the biggest, but unquestionably the best fish of my life- The fattest sea-liced hen I have ever seen. She was 94cm long and 52cm around the belly, silver and lilac and just stunning. She tipped the scales at 23lb. It was half and hour before the helicopter came to end fishing for the week, and what a way to end. She took a size 6 stoat's tail on a floating line. JKB- the net detaches from the handle for weighing the fish!
The adrenaline does run a little brown when a fish like that takes off...
