If I remember rightly, live fish out of water always look down. Dead fish have the pupils fixed in a central "stare". Mike That's what I thought as well.

I disagree up to a point. In my experience any fish, even the freshest springer caught and being disgorged looks down at the hook/your hands/forceps so using the "eyes down" observation as a judgment of keltness can be misleading, but once disgorged of the hook all things being equal a kelt will still have an "eyes down" appearance and a good fresh fish will probably look sideways again.
