Im sure you have all had non believers asking how you can sit on a river bank all day.....ignorance is everywhere I always protest that its good aerobic exercise. Wading down a fast flowing river while wielding a 15' rod takes a bit of energy. So, how does salmon fishing compare with other sports as a form of physical exercise. If it stands up well we have another justification for spending more time fishing- when the wife kicks off we can say 'hey its a health thing.'

I get it all the time Ross - people assume I sit on a wicker basket under a green umbrella, drowning a worm!
I admit to feeling fairly nackered after wielding a 15' rod all day, especially if I'm fishing a sink tip and heavy tube. As you say, it has to be good exercise!
I do a lot of sea trout fishing from June - August, and I reckon I walk miles getting to some beats, and walking between pools. Some of the best beats I know involve walking up and down steep valley sides - I certainly feel fitter by the end of the season!

I recently started a new job and part of the application process was a full medical. The medical I was to attend fell on a Friday and I was booked to fish the Tay that Saturday. When the nurse took my blood pressure she said that it was a bit higher than she would expect, so she took it again and it was up on the previous reading. She then told me to relax as much as possible before taking the final reading. The final reading was significantly lower than the other two and she asked how I managed to relax so much. Simple, I told her " I just thought about my fishing trip tomorrow"
Now I tell my wife that to maintain a healthy blood pressure I have to think about and participate in fishing as much as possible.
