because 1) you can catch fish even in a howling gale 2) no cold hands 3) no wind knots 4) line is cheaper 5) you dont have to learn to speycast 6) you can change the fishing depth of your lures easily 7) less wading 8) you catch more fish.......... anymore? Kingfisher

Are you saying that it is easier? If so, then it doesn't make it "better", in my opinion.......

I can see strong cases on either side I would just like to say that I fished with the spinner for years while struggling to get to grips with the fly, once I started to catch on the fly I would have to say personally the feeling of 'getting your string pulled ' comes second to none.

I love to fly fish, but if I was asked by the boss for a fish for the castle,I would reach for the spinning rod and the floating devons which I feel is not too unlike fly fishing in several ways BA%£*%KS some of you may cry,I however thinks so,certainly in the spring,. Big flies and sinking lines is a bit of upmarket spinning after all,is'nt it ?? (gone and done it now !)

Good point Kercock, I still like to fish with devons and also find a place for; as my mate calls 'Ray Parlours'. On hard to fish fly water they are deadly.

I feel that a good #9/10 fly rod 9/9.6 and a line tray and a collie varient I would be able to outfish many spinners ,yesterday on Bigsweir it was noted that it was something I should have on board for fishing the slow flowig parts ! As well ,take a staff for the rocks !(memoo 2 me )

As well ,take a staff for the rocks !(memoo 2 me ) That might be true on Bigsweir but it is not the case on much of the lower and middle Wye where the wooden devon rules supreme in the deep and slow flowing pools, especially in the Spring.
