A decent run of fish are making their way through the middle reaches. A BAA ticket is a good bet for the next few days. stuck at home looking after the kids, while friends are having fun chasing the grilse

Managed a cast yesterday morning with Stoater. We saw fish, but no serious action. Great to meet up again though. Went back this morning for a quick session. First time I covered a lie where I had a strong pull yesterday I got the same. Switched to a slightly heavier and bigger fly fished faster. Locked up as it came across the lie. It was a nice clean fresh fish in double figures. Five minutes later I was close to chucking my rod in the river as I parted company with Severn salmon #4 for the season. The fish have been very thin on the ground on the middle reaches this year due to the high water and are only just starting to 'stick' properly in my section. Hoping that the big tides bring more in and that my run of dropped fish ends. Tom

Tom Great to see you and the Severn in good shape. Not surprised you got one, that run looked very likely indeed, a very well done! It is good to see pioneering fishing being done in areas where others havn't seen the opportunities. What fly worked? Did the fish take where you lost the one on Thurs? Well don't forget you're welcome to have a throw up North if you can secure a pass from wife and work. One day, I will catch my Severn salmon. Nothing like a challenge!

Hi Tim, I'm afraid I didn't express myself properly. The bugger got off!!!!! It swam up past me and back down again and then said bye bye. The fly was an orange and black 'skinny pig' on a half inch copper tube. Tom p.s. I will try that little double very soon.

:'(Reading back, yes I now see you clearly stated your exasperation at losing 4 good "chances" on the trot. These sequences happen, as we all know! Let's hope you don't rival my own catostrophes of 2002-2003. I "messed up" 11 consequetive "chances", like you, I was all for packing this silly game in! Then, April '03 to August '03 I landed 13 Salmon from 13 takes. I could do no wrong. Overall, I think I'd feel happy to land 50% of the proper takers I come across. Any other folk doing better/worse?

Glad you two enjoyed yourselves. Here is that big wild brownie I was telling you about. The reel is the biggest size baitrunner.

What weight would you put that fish at? I love wild brownies but have only managed just over 3lbs. That looks a beast!

Hi lamson, Cheers, but not my fish. Caught by a mate spinning for salmon. Just put the pic up to show the potential of the Severn.
Hi Robbie, We didn't have scales, but would say somewhere around 6lb if not a wee bit more. Tom

Severn report
Water level fluctuating between .12 and .23 below normal summer level.
The river should be at dead summer low, but dam releases continue, plus maybe some bore hole water.
This water is coming in for two reasons:
To ensure river levels are high enough to extract it for the public drinking supply at Worcester.
To create a bit of capacity should there be a wet winter.
The result of this is we've had a couple of mini freshets this week that have pulled fish upriver and got them edging up the fords. IME the MSW fish can run even at .16 below for Bridgnorth to Worcester. This has created the possibility of some exciting sport with big fish in thin water.

Had both fish in the 'proper'dark, after 10pm. I messed about with Waltham's pattern slightly as the florist was closed yesterday. It has a black masking tape shellback, plus longer feelers.
I had a very strong hunch the prawn would work as it allows me to fish a big fly image while 'shrymphing' ( induced take/ tipping/ sink and draw) which is something i do in daylight with little wee 3/8ths of 1/2 inch copper tubes. You need a big fly at night on the Severn, as visibility is never better than what a lot of welsh sewin fishers would consider 'marginal' for night fishing.

Had a few more this last few days. On both the black prawn and more traditional fare. Both day and night fishing. This fish was caught seven navigation weirs and fifty plus river miles from the estuary, so they are penetrating far despite the very low water. Tom

Tom Lovely salmon, but no more than you deserve for all your pioneering on the Severn, isn't it good to see a line of fishers with double-handers thrashing away? Thanks for all the recent advice, will definitely be on the River this week, so hope to see you there!

River about 2 ft up in the middle reaches and still a very dirty brown colour. Fly fishing is off the agenda for a while...
