The guys with me on Monday who caught fish were using a floating line with a fast sink tip added. They were both using Salar doubles tied shrimp patterns an Orange one and Yellow and Red the other size 5 and 7,however the ghillie on the beat will advise you ,different beats may require different set ups, hope this helps.

Eh up Madkeen sorry but my finger is not on the pulse just yet,you are right it is a bit early yet but I imagine some one will have sneaked a fish out by now.Do recommend you get there and have a look and try to get things sussed, bear in mind at this moment in time you cant fish the Grainhead until after 6pm in the evenings, but get there after and some one will be knocking about if you need info.Chap to ask as he will be kicking around is Willie McAdam he walks with a bit of a limp and is usually top rod on the "Grain",damn good bloke too, tell him "Yorkie"has pointed you in his direction, don't hesitate to ask if you need any info. Pedro.

I have a spring timeshare week on Upper Scone, although there has been no spring fish fo me yet We alternate between Benchil and Pitlochry so i have fished it quite a bit. I'd say the nature of the beat will change throught the seasons and i've never fished it in mid summer. This will be (hopefully) gilse time, and there should be plenty of fish running through but intercepting them may be tricky. I'm not sure if Geodie will have a boat on by then? There will be some lovely water to fish - i really hope they can get you to the other bank though, as i anticipate the beat not been quite so good if stuck on the Stanley bank.

Madkeen,
When we were there in February one member of our party landed a 23lb liced springer which was lying just behind the croy below the Mill on the Stanley side. If you were bank fishing on that day with the the knowledge of hindsight then you would give your bottom dollar to fish the Stanley side.
Just incase you thought it was doom and gloom from my previous comments ;D

When i used to fish for trout on the tay and tummel we used 10ft no 6/7 rods (it is a big river ) at this time of year youll be looking for the evening rise pale olives will most liking be hatching.Make sure you have some pale olive spiders and some sedge patterns for the evening but am sure you will see plenty of salmon so you might not have time for the trout. alan
