Zephead/Tyneandrew,
Thought I was dreaming for a second when I saw the letters APC!
Currently studying Building Surveying online and have started the ATC. Thought I would take a break from study and look at someting fishy - no escape!
Have travelled to the Coquet a few times - and had to drive over the Wear to get there. Suprised to see somewhere that the Sea Trout returns for the Wear are higher than for many rivers - perhaps I should have stopped driving!
Fairly inexperienced flyfisher and difficult for me to fish at the moment for various reasons, but will watch the comments on the Wear with interest.

River is `up` and running coloured. Salmon and Seatrout are being caught on the spinner. The largest fish being 14.5 lb. If and only if the rain stops for the next 24hrs the water at Durham will be just right for some fly action! Fingers crossed for the next few hours.

Had my first night time sea trout about half an hour ago on the Wear.
9ft trout rod, size 6 stoats tail. The fish was out of the water more than it was in - a great new fishing experience.

Some fish on the Wear today. Most were salmon with the odd seatrout showing. I took a nice salmon. (See photo section)
The river is very low for the time of year and fishing is hard. Black and Silver tubes are the fish takers.

UPDATE!!!!!!
Water levels have dropped.
Still running very brown but will be clear in the next 48 hrs subject to there being no rain up Weardale.
The odd fish that are in the pools are very coloured. (Today-Returned a large red cock fish)
Seen one other fish being landed and it was also coloured.

Today the water levels are VERY low! The river is running clear for this time of year with just the odd coloured fish showing. The area around Durham is typical for this time of year with loads of surface leaves fouling the flies/hooks. All in all not worth the journey if you are wanting a real chance of catching fish. Thanks for the report WM. I had a trip to Page Bank last Friday to find the water very low with nothing showing. Drove over to the Tees where it was also low but fish were being caught from the deeper pools mostly to spinners. Hoping for some rain! Steve.

If anyone is planning a late trip to fish the Wear then I am more than happy to give a full report of the fishing and water conditions.
Today I heard that a fish of around 20lb was caught on the Wear and returned.
Still very low water and running clear.
Cheers WM

Ok....I have just returned from fishing the Wear and have had my third largest fish. I caught a 27.5 lb cock salmon and returned it. The fish was 45 inches long and with a deep girth.

Hi, back in 1989 I had fish of 30lb and 35lb and both on the fly. This 27.5 lb fish is one of the largest in recent years. Cheers WM

Just had the dog for a walk along the banks of the Wear at Durham and saw a couple of coloured fish showing. There was one guy fishing the prawn but with no luck as of the time I was there. Sat and watched the kingfisher perched on an old bare branch watching the water with great concentration. (Did not see him catch anything either) ;D There are now a pair of swans on near Durham. They have been there a few days but normaly move off to settle on the ponds at Brasside. Not a bad walk for watching wildlife. Regards WM

Had a look at Durham today. (Not to fish) Some very coloured fish showing in the very low water. Watched one very good fish of around 22 lb-25 lb moving around. Plenty of coloured fish at Chester le Street waiting for the rain and a rise in water levels. Reports of many fish waiting off the coast at Roker for the rise in the river. Weather reports are showing a right old mixture of rain and sun for the next 72 hrs. If we were to get enough rain to give a 3 - 4 inch rise it would be enough to get the fish moving. If we had a larger rise in water then the fresh fish would enter the lower/middle stretches of the Wear. It is all down to the weather and the time left! Hope it happens and the Wear anglers have some good sport. I will report any change as it happens on a daily basis. Regards and Tight lines, WM

There was light rain up Weardale this afternoon. So lets hope it gets heavy through the night. It is light drizzle here in Durham at 2245 hrs, again lets hope it pours down in the night. If it does and it is a big IF then Tuesday/Wednesday could have some fish moving through the system here in Durham.
However my prediction is that the rains will come too late and there will be a massive run of good fish in mid November!
I might give it a try in the next 24/48 hrs regardless of the conditions as the end of season is nearing very quickly.
Will keep you all posted with any changes or results.
Regards WM

Still no rain and the water level is very low. Lots of leaves on the surface and plenty of weed which would normaly be washed away if we had a rise in the water. Some fish showing at Durham but they are old resident fish which are now very coloured. I had a chat with the EA baliff just after I returned a 10 lb cock salmon which was caught on a black and silver tube fly fished quickly in the deeper of what water is there. The guy from the EA said the same as myself that the fish would run mid November. He also said anglers were wanting the season extended to cover the November runs and to have the begining of the season made later. I said that it would a bad move as some of the Wears best runs of early fish are in March. Guess there is those who fish the fashion of the autumn months and there is those who fish on knowledge. ie the early runs which nearly everyone misses! Well it looks like a poor end to the season but here is to the hope of rain and the rise we need.
