Hi guys and gals,
I'm thinking of starting to prawn/shrimp this season. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips and ideas on what tackle i need to use. I'm going to get a 11' spinning rod and a baitrunner reel but apart from that i am clueless. Any hints and tips will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Adrian

Never really fished the shrimp myself as I got bored after an hour but the people that I know who do use a 12' Avon type rod and a center pin reel and fish the shrimp under a small drennan pike float. As soon as the float moves, strike. I don't have a problem with the odd bit of shrimping as fish are mostly lip hooked and can be returned no problems. I do have a problem when people are using this method to fish to order on the bottom of the river in low water conditions, hardly likely in 2007, famous last words cue the drought.

Caught plenty of fish on the shrimp, it's banned on most systems on this side of the water. Our system even banned the float, but I got round that. The usual method here is to fish it just like a worm letting it bounce along on the current, hit anytime it stops. The other method is to fish it on a dropper, usually on biggger water. Size 6 or 8 treble on a shrimp pin, always carried 3 different colours, ruby red, purple and natural. The tackle you have is fine. btw Most people seem to think you can just put on a shrimp and you will get fish , it is just like any other method, you have to know how to use it. Tight lines.

Thanks Para,
As i said in a i have caught salmon on fly and spinnig so i thought i would give the shrimp a go. As you have said it isnt as easy as just chucking it out and i think that if you want to be a good alround angler then we should try all the different aspects of fishing. I'm going to fish the shrimp a lot this season so fingers crossed.

Adrainy,
I used to fish the prawn/shrimp more years ago than I care to remember, before it became banned on the major Scottish rivers.
I used to fish it just like fishing the worm, letting it bob along with perhaps a few split shot to hold it steady, depending on the current/flow rate.
One thing I almost always did, was give the fish time to have a good "chew" just as with worm fishing. You'll feel the "stop" as the bait is taken - I would never strike immediately, I would count to 5 slowly, then strike. Rarely missed a fish.
A useful tip, with the prawn pins - put 2 on the line, one eyed up the other eyed down. Insert one through the head down to the tail, the other up from the tail to the head. Then (if using a purple dyed bait, wrap purple elastic thread (the kind available from Co-op haberdashery dept), round the shrimp/prawn, not too excessive, but enough to bind it onto the eyes of the pins, along the body of the bait, and this will prevent the bait falling off or becoming dislodged when bouncing along the bottom/rocks. With care this will keep the bait whole and intact for many casts more than if using only one pin or with no binding elastic thread.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Cheers,
Altmor.

adrian i think what billy meant was fish the shrimp on a fly rod with floater or sink tip and cast slightly upriver and let swing with some shot depending on current cheers ryan

ahhhh Adrian, I was speaking to Mr Munn and he said you were contemplating this and now I see its true, you are turning to the dark side... please reconsider, I will even tye you a few more flies if it helps ;D but seriously it can be a very productive method and is quite skillful, apparently a few fish being caught on the Bush on it must call up and see you one of these days cheers E

Hiya E,
Mr Munn has lost a lot of sleep lately with my antics chasing salmon. I'm not going to the DARK SIDE just going to the GREY SIDE. I'm still gonna be fly fishing and i hope to be fly fishing this friday all being well. I'd just like to learn another aspect of fishing thats all. Its not that i think i'l get more fish because this is my second year at the salmon and i have had success on the fly but i just want to expand my knowledge.
When i fish for bows i know how to fish buzzers dries wets lures etc etc. So i want to be proficent in all aspects of salmon.
