Hello - new on the forum, wonder if anyone can help ?
I'm off to fish the Gaula in Norway (beats above the Norwegian Fly Fishers Waters) from the 29th of June for a week, I have a couple of questions :
1) I know that you need to have you tackle disinfected to fish in Norway if you are coming from the UK - how is this done, is it in the UK or Norway, is certification required, etc etc.
2) Strength of leader
3) Size and type of fly.
CHEERS !

Cheers Colin, I am off to Gaula tomorrow As to your questions, 1) You need to desinfect your tackle at Gaula. This can be done at many of the fishing license selling points. At Stören this can be done at least at Naturcenter and Vårvolden Camping. You can get the state license also from these same places. www.gaula.no/2) Strength of the leader depends on the size of the fly, which depends on the condition of the river, which depends on the amount of rain at that time of year. Which can be anything. The size of the river changes rapidly, and the variation on the water height can be as much as 1.5 to 2 meters during one week. So take all the line densities, fly sizes and leader thicknesses with you. The water amount at Gaulfossen can be seen here www2.nve.no/h/hd/plotreal/Q/0122.00009.000/3) From a #12 to three inch tubes, all possible, see the response above. Black flies are good, Stoats tail in various sizes, as well as Sunray Shadow. On flood big black and orange tubes work. Green Butt and Black Sheep are also known killers.

It has never taken more than 5 to 10 minutes for me, so no problem in your schedule.

watch out for the mad disinfector - the first time i had it done at a garage the nutter doing it submerged my waders, completely - thereby filling them inside and out with disinfectant - took a while to dry them out inside - obviously not a fisherman

We did our own when we arrived at Storen fishcamp,I had got sachets of the chemical from our local bailiffs, same stuff as they used in Storen naturecenter, cost nil. at the naturecenter they charged 10kroner each for a few seconds spray over everything. we did our own gear taking great care to do our gear properly. However that was a few years ago and things may be taken seriously now. I was amazed at the offhand approach to the spraying i must say. The locals we met(very helpful) favoured any colour as long as it was black with a touch of green in the underwing of what looked very much like a silver stoats tail tied templedog style with JC cheeks and the hint of green tied on small bottle tubes. I will try to get more info for you,my mate comes back from the Gaula over the weekend.

Hopeless river
Fish the Spey it is light years ahead.
The anglers have manners that Gaula anglers need beating into them.

Mr Gunn - I fish the Dee... the Norway trip is just to confirm that I already fish on the best river.....

I was having a look through some Gaula web sites and viewed some video footage that was on them. I was appalled by the way they treated a particular fish once beached, and made no sure way of dispatching it

Mr Gunn - I fish the Dee... the Norway trip is just to confirm that I already fish on the best river..... Sorry but you fish the 2nd or 3rd best river, the Spey is by far the best and the Ness comes close. The Dee is a bit narrow and slow flowing, and has few beats which are double bank

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....
The Spey is certainly a true classic river with as you rightly say more double bank beats, but the Dee is 'Special'. If I am not mistaken after talking to a member of the Dee board earlier this year the Dee out fished the Spey during the spring months.
As for the Gaula I only wish I could join Colin and fish there for the week. Colin say hello to Par for me.

If I am not mistaken after talking to a member of the Dee board earlier this year the Dee out fished the Spey during the spring months. And France were beating Italy for a while last night. The Dee always starts with a flourish but the Spey aleways outfishes it.

Sarcasm probably.....the Tees is a sad story.
After i hooked up to the third sea trout on the Esk last night deep in a steep sided coniferous valley, with mist hanging on the hill tops and not a person for miles............i did think........'this is the best river i have fished'.
Most rivers have something special to offer. There is something very satisfying about fishing alone away from the usual commercial set up of salmon beats. They are, of course, great but fishing alone away from anyone and everything is certainly an experience on a par if not better than the norm..........imo
