Thanks YE, will give them a go. One more point about GAC. I bought an Orvis rod from them 2 years ago, upon inspection it had a broken first ring, they had a new rod out to me within 48 hours of my call, collected the broken one and gave me a courtesy call the next day to check that I was happy with the replacement, so it's not ALL bad.

I only use GAC in emergencies. With Machardys being online now I too am back using them for fly tying etc. They are not fully up and running online but you can download their catalogue and phone in your order. www.mchardys.co.uk/

Have only used the GAC once (for fly tying materials) and unlikely I'd be a customer again as there was a huge delay for something they said they had in stock Used to be (many years ago now!) an 'agent' for Sportfish and whilst I don't think they're as competitive as others on price I still think they have excellent customer service. Mullarkeys, John Norris, Harris Sportsmail and Lochside have all done me proud over the years - no complaints. Recently (for fly tying materials mostly) Lakeland www.lakelandflytying.com/ and Lathkill www.lathkill.com/index.html - excellent, 1st class. Oh.... and I do still occasionally support my local shops

like hamish i found that it is usually fly tying stuff that seems to be GACs downfall. Maybe our £30 orders are forgotten because they lavish all their attention on Salmondan the moneyman speaking of which, dan's example re: his orvis rod is not as fair a point as i posted earlier. Surely good service like dan experienced is a necessity and not a virtue. annan- hadn't spotted the spelling mistake. word of advice: make sure you always use capitals at the start of sentences or malcolm will go nuts . do you like what im doing with lower case

Yup concur with the idea that their concept is great with huge range...
Prices vary from competitive to shockingly over the odds.
But from a negative perspective one thing puts them above all other online retailers and that's the delivery times.
1 packet silver salar sz 11s £6 something.
After a week went straight to Douglas at Flymakers in Aberdeen and bought the same for less which arrived in a day.
Left the GAC order for another fortnight! (forgot about it) then remembered and rang up to cancel.
They'd had over 3.5 weeks to process one little order.
Victims of their own success methinks.

Maybe our £30 orders are forgotten because they lavish all their attention on Salmondan the moneyman lol. ;D. I hope that doesn't stick, it's too much to type in on login! On a serious note though, if I don't spend it on fishing, she'll spend it on shoes and handbags . You're right macd, good service like that should be expected on every transaction, whether rods or hooks, sadly most people's experience with GAC leaves a lot to be desired. I had no idea they were so unpopular. Thanks for the web links guys (and gals, let no-one call me un PC), I'll check them out. For all you spinners who use devon minnows, I found a guy on ebay last year who specialises, I'll dig his name out later and post in the relevant section. soon to be skint Dan

I've heard a similar type of thing happening elsewhere, sometimes they aren't charged to the card involved. It seems that certain computer systems don't delete some failed transactions and send the goods automatically when they arrive in stock. If they didn't charge your card at the actual time of the purchase then you may not have been charged at all. Please don't quote me on this but as far as I'm aware, due to the new (ish) chip and pin regs you have to provide your 3 digit security code when not present at the time of purchase (or your pin number when you are). Retailers are not allowed to store this information for use at another date. I hope this makes some sort of sense. Or have I failed to grasp the correct end of the stick(again) . Dan

I have used GAC for a long time now, and, I can assure you they are not faultless. I have had little or no problems, generally very fast service and certainly friendly and helpful on the phone. I did try Mc Hardys twice and they totally twatted the order both times, never again.

Why d'you ask?[/quote] I posted this because in an earlier post you said you'd dig his name out as you recommended him. I can also recommend Mac - great service and he sells 1 1/2" ruby red devons - good man

Well that's it then, another weekend over . Thanks to Yorkshire Esk for the Harrogate Orvis shop tip, went there on saturday and bought everything I needed, or so I thought. Instead of buying fire orange tying thread I bought fire orange floss, D'oh! And I forgot the jungle cock after I'd looked at it and thought "Oh yeah, I'll pick some of that up in a minute", turned round and thought "oooh look, shiny things!" ;D. Thanks also to betanut for the Lathkill recommendation. Halifax! S'only 5 miles away, looks like I'm off there tomorrow then . Although not entirely successful, more fun than online shopping with the subject of this thread. P.S. The nice lady in the Orvis shop said I could put a picture of my fish from the Spey on their notice board. lol. That'll be the day.

Now thats no attitude Dan , THINK POSITIVE ;D ;D ;D Mike, the only thing I'm positive about is that I'm going fishing ;D. And I can't flippin' wait! I can barely contain myself waiting for my Annan permits to come, (behold the glorious 25th of Feb, yeah I know it's a sunday, 27th for my first visit), let alone the mighty Spey. Oh the anticipation is killing me, now where's that crazy looking smiley?
