Ryan, I started off in the merchant navy as an engineer and moved offshore some 7 years ago. I now work on a 2 on 3 off rota and have done for a year or so now with Petrofac - think about 146 days a year. Good points, loads of fishing in 3 weeks, when you want. Bad point, might miss a good rise in water and miss all the fish!! Can't have it all ways though.

I work in engineering in the aerospace industry and have done since leaving school to do a 4 year apprenticeship. This was great because:-
a) I got paid, OK it wasn't great to start with but one I came out of my time I got a whopping pay rise. b) I now have a trade which is recognized all over the world c) I went to collage on day release to do a HNC, I got the chance to do a degree but I am too lazy / preoccupied with hobbies and family to take up this offer.
Anyway 13 years after leaving school I am still working for the same company and have been on shifts for 10 years, 3 x 12 hr shifts a week, its a hard life. So every week I get 4 days off to go fishing etc and when I am skint I can do overtime and double my wage and still get a day off. For me shift work is great and it suites my lifestyle and I get plenty of time with the kids. The nights can be tiring especially in the summer if you can't sleep during the day due to the heat and you have to work some or all of the weekend but on my days off I generally get the river to myself.
Ideally I would like to work outside but these jobs are generally hard graft and dont pay well, I dont mind the graft but I do like to have the cash coming in.
