As it is Friday afternoon, how about a topical focus group moment, and seeing as we seem to have quite a few axe-men among the congregation how about this perennial pub favourite?
Arcade Fire, are they "the best band in existence" as many critics have claimed since the release of the cheerily entitled Funeral? Now with the release of the follow up Neon Bible the Culture Show BBC 2 11.35 tonight seeks to find out. Do salmon fuishers have a view?
For those who are curious, there are extended clips of AF on You Tube - type in Arcade Fire and for a sample of them at their best (?) try "Keep The Car Running" or "Intervention" - AF performing these on the David Letterman show is probably better than some of the mobile video images at Gigs

Thanks for that - a very enjoyable diversion. It's a good thing the boss is out. It is an original mixture of instruments and a great overall sound (depending on the clip quality) but I'll reserve judgment on BBiE until I've heard a bit more . I'm also enjoying Muse "Black Holes & Revelations" (yes I know it's so very last year) at the moment. Mark

Arcade fire. Hadn't heard of them so checked out Tube as directed. Natty little beat combo. But not my cup of T, old bean. Think I'll stick to Richard Thompson. Loads of his stuff on YouTube for all you acoustic/electric players out there. Awesome player on both and a unique style. Check him out , pickers.

I too will be reserving judgement until I've had chance to listen to more. Interestingly "new" sound they have which would probably grow on me. For cutting edge axe work (no pun intended) though I have to agree with toucan for the muse thang (esp. exo politic) and possibly add a vote for some of the more complex fretboard plinking (and plonking) being touted by the fratellis (creepin up the backstairs ), roots in jazz or c&w perhaps? To cut to the point, I would not class AF as being ready for title of BBiE just yet. Not sure who that honour would go to though, possibly someone like the Australian Pink Floyd tribute act (just for the live show). Best go home and lubricate the old thinking organ.

Koss(off) was king. Long gone and sorely missed. Not a rock picker in sight today to fill his shoes.

Hey pop pickers.
Aye, 'Funeral' is a good piece. Haven't listened to Neon Bible in its entirety but it's on the 'to buy' list. In a similar vein, British Sea Power bang out a good choon or 2. There's so much good stuff out there these days if you care to peer below the flimsy layer of dross most people call pop these days.

I thought this thread would be about space invaders or asteroids! I thought it would be some new tying material to start with ;D but it's far more interesting than that.

Being heavily involved in the music 'biz' I checked this crew (AF) out with anticipation. Unusual line up and arrangements but kind of formulaic in structure. Reminded me a lot of the Cure but without the quality tunes. Talking Heads meets Chumbawumba with a bit of Dexy's thrown in and topped of with a smattering of Nick Cage / John Cale and the New York Dolls.
You Tuber's - type in the words Klaus Nomi and marvel !
My CD selection for the motor this week is.......
Massive Attack - Protection John Martyn - Solid Air Transformer - Lou Reed Antony and the Johnson's - I Am A Bird now Buena Vista Social Club - Untitled Bonnie Prince Billy (with Tortoise) - anyone heard of him ? Herbie Hancock - Headhunters Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love Joni Mitchel - Mingus Little Feat - The Last Record Album ID + The Blockheads - New Boots Van Morrison - Astral Weeks Frank Zappa - Hot Rats Saint Andrew - The Word On The Pavey (Scottish guy - anybody heard?) Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (perfect music for driving down to the water prior to night time S/T fishing).

Never heard of Bonnie Prince Billy or Saint Andrew. Can't get enough of Miles Davis - Miles in the Sky at the moment for night time or sunny day driving. Solid Air - never tire of it.
