Leaving blue aside fnar fnar. What are your fave films in the last 40 years? The Codfather? Joe Le Taxi driver? Star Wars? As good as it gets? Deerhunter? Goodfellas? Witches of Eastwick? Jaws? Great to see the thoughts of other posters on what really gets them out the hoose and munching popcorn staring at the big screen.

SPK
I'd go with:
Blue Velvet - Dennis Hopper is Frank Booth Once Upon a Time in America- Leone's greatest work To Kill a Mockingbird - Gregory Peck gives the performance of his life as Atticus Finch Diva - the French show us how to do psychological thrillers Apocalypse Now - rarely can films be considered works of art but this one is. Sheen, Duvall and Brando are magnificent
cheers
Splash
Oh yes and Jackass the Movie ;D

Dirty Harry Alien Papillon Platoon Gladiator Saving Private Ryan Lord of the Rings Get Carter (only because it is set in the Newcastle of my youth) Zulu Mmm, seems to be a lot of killing & bloodshed in my list.

Good thread Greenbanks and in common with the excellent 'decades' threads by CLag it gives forum members the chance to 'revisit' or review their preconceptions of members through the medium of song and dance as opposed to rods and reels - which cant be a bad thing. Its thrown up a few surprises for me I'll tell ye ! Movies ? KOYANISQUATSI - 1982. Dir. Godfrey Reggio. Music by Philip Glass. Great visuals - no dialogue. ERASERHEAD - 1977. Dir. David Lynch. Black and white and totally bizarre. KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS - 1949. Dir. Robert Hammer. Alec Guinness plays 9 characters in this Ealing classic. SPINAL TAP - 1984. Dir. Rob Steiner. A 'rockumentary' that does for rock 'n roll what the Sound of Music did for hills. ;D AMELIE - 2001. Dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Features the gorgeous Audrey Tatou as an innocent Parisian girl who decides to help others. Something like my guid self. ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE - 1946. Dir. Frank Capra. Jimmy Stewart in this all time classic 'feel good' movie - so good that you don't mind the idea of going Czech Nymphing for mullet off the rocks at Auchmithie. THE JERK - 1979. Dir. Rob Reiner. Steve Martin plays an imbecile who achieves untold wealth through a weird invention. Check it out if you are not worried about soiling your moleskin plus two's. DUCK SOUP - 1932. Dir. Leo McCarey. Impossible to pick one Marx Bros movie - this was the tastiest. ALL classics. MANHATTAN - 1979. Woody Allen at his best. Shot in B+W and pays homage to the 'golden section' concept of framing for all you 'anoraks' out there. JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS - 1963. Dir. Don Chafey / Ray Harryhausen. Often have nightmares about encountering the 'Harpies' (not Herpes) whilst in the process of trying to hand tail a thumper at dusk....yes ! I know !. MAN ON THE MOON - 1999. Dir. Milos Forman. Jim Carey plays the tragic and avant garde comedian Andy Kaufman (Taxi). REM wrote the title song for this movie. THE TRUMAN SHOW - 1998. Dir. Peter Weir. Jim Carey plays a guy living in a reality TV bubble - only he doesn't know it. THE PRODUCERS - 1968. Mel Brooks classic starring Zero Mostel as Max Bialystock and Gene Wilder as Leo Bloom. Forget the 2005 remake - even with Uma Thurman in it. Theres a few - could go on but divorce proceedings will ensue if I don't hit it on the head now. Regards to all as always.

Shawshank Redemption - and anything else that reminds us that there is always HOPE Great film, and the hope theme also applies to Papillon, another classic film. Funny that nobody has mentioned The Shining, I think it was voted best film in a recent poll?
