So bye, bye to Level 42 and Modern Romance. Phew, thank god the 80s are over (actually, come to think of it should have listed Killing Joke Living in the Eighties as representative) Anyway, here’s some cracking stuff (featuring nothing from Embrace) to represent living in the 90s 1. Faithless – InsomniaDespite having a lead singer who looked like a fall guy from Benny Hill and who is named after a popular kids sweet, Faithless still managed to produce the club classic of club classics featuring one of popular music's most instantly recognisable and immortal riffs…..nice 2. Happy Mondays – Step OnRepresenting the Madchester scene (and ex-offico members Primal Scream), it was a hard choice, but this track probably sums it up best. A fiver for the person who can explain the point of Bez, or perhaps that is the point 3. Moby – Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?Marshall Mather’s (that's the only mention Flip Flop and [c]Rap are gonna get) favourite musician and the signature tune from the quintessential lifestyle album of the late 90s. 4. Alanis Morissette – You Oughta KnowOuucchhh! Guys,……hide yer bunny 5. Nirvana – Smells Like Teen SpiritThe grunge anthem. Nothing more to say really 6. Oasis – Slide AwayBack in the days heady days of Brit Pop, when the Gallagher brothers let their music do the talking, and the world was a better place for it 7. The Prodigy – FirestarterThe only band with a true cross-over following from indie, rock, metal and dance fans - Keith Flint a legend, freaky looking, but still a legend 8. R.E.M – Everybody HurtsAutomatic For the People was yet another masterwork from the Athens Georgia Foursome. Although this track from it often features highly in lists of top ten romantic ballads, it is, in fact, an anti-suicide song….sorry to be a downer if you didn’t know that before now 9. Underworld – Born SlippyThe sound track to the Trainspotting generation. Lager, lager, lager…..mmmmm’ 10. The Verve – Lucky Man“Happiness Something in my own place I'm standing naked Smiling, I feel no disgrace With who I am” The theme tune for readers of Mens Life Style Mags. Man who casts no shadow, we are not worthy.

A fiver for the person who can explain the point of Bez, or perhaps that is the point Probably cos he was the only person, even in a drug induced Manchester, who was able to keep up with Shaun Ryder! It certainly wasn't for his dancing skills (but then again, I doubt Shaun would have gotten far in Pop Idol)

The 90's seemed to pass me by. Probably more an attitude thing on my part than anything else. The whole thing seemed to be either a bunch of snotty nosed little ratbags with nothing new to show us (ie Oasis ) or Armani clad fading "stars" filling their overflowing coffers. Not at my expense , thank you very much. Went back to my trad roots and I've never looked back since. Diving into my foxhole as I type this

The 90's did seem to flash by.
Getting captured, bairn born, leaving the mob after blowing the hell out of the Serbs, stopped playing footie, 2 Unlimited, Del a Soul, Techno Tronic and my fav from this time was the Time Frequency.

Neat selection as always CLag. The 90's - Thatcher to Blair with a few no hoper's in between. Same crap - different colour. 'Rachel' Aniston haircuts for the ladies to go with their "fruit based drinks" - the 90's 'Farrah' look I guess. Cargo pants, piercings, the rebirth of The Fleeeeeece, E Commerce, hair bands for diamond geezers, baseball caps and puffa jackets. Alan McGee got rich. Britpop versus Grunge. No inclination to go into the whole socio economic thing right now suffice to say that the rich got richer and the less fortunate got smarter. Some great music though - I loved ............. Reverend Black Grape - Black Grape : Team Spirit - Nirvana : Scooby Snacks - FLC : Ironic - Alanis Morissette : Walk This Way - Aerosmith & Run DMC : Losing My Religion - REM : Tubthumpin - Chumbawumba : I Try - Macy Gray : Give It Away - RH Chilli Peppers : Groove Is In The Heart - Dee-Lite : Jump Around - House of Pain : All I Wanna Do - Cheryl Crow : Slim Shady - Eminem : Mr Jones - Counting Crows : Baby One More Time - Britney (and why not ?) : Stupid Girl - Garbage : The Power - Snap : Killer - Adamski / Seal : Nothing Compares 2U - Sinead O'Connor : Ebeneezer Good - Shamen : Park Life - Blur : Common People - Pulp : Praise You - Norrie Cook : Gangster Paradise - Coolio : Karma Koma - Massive Attack. The list could go on but me and the missus are about to spend a bit of quality time playing Kerplunk. I hated........ When A Man Loves A Woman - Michael Bolton : Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus : Goodbye England's Rose - Reg Dwight : End Of The Road - Boys 2 Men : Everything I Do - Bryan Adams : No Son Of Mine - Genesis : I'd Do Anything For Love - Meat Loaf : Live Your Life Be Free - Belinda Carlisle : Macarena - Los Del Rio : Titanic Theme (My Heart Will Go On) - Celine Dion.....tbc

In our house, music in the 90s was taken over by my teenage sons. Oasis and Wonderwall, dance music etc.
I went fishing more often, and listened to REM and old 60s stuff in the car.

Fair do's CLagtastic - point taken and accepted. Disregard the above 'lightweights'. In true Desert Island style here's the bakers 10. 1) Black Box - Ride On Time (well spotted). 2) Chris Issac - Wicked Game. Haunting guitar sound that even Hank B would slaver for. 3) Lisa Stansfield - All around The World......"and I, I, I, cant find my wading stick". Great production. 4) Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much......"so you think your Jackie Charlton?" 5) Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm. Totally original lyric. Kevin Ayers would have been proud. 6) 'Lucky' Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way?. Depends which pool your fishing. 7) Kula Shaker - Hush. Joe TeX classic. Anthemic to the point of shamanism. 8) Mr Wendal - Arrested Development. More than a band....much more. Guid troot fishers. 9) Stereo MC's - Connected. A salmon fishers war cry. 10) Boops - Sly & Robbie. The acceptable face of 'dub'. Bass 'n Drum men read 'em and weep. 11) Moby - Honey. This guy would put Bill Sykes to shame. A human magpie - but it works. Am Gonnae go and put on the dancin waders now. Yours aye STippy

Well I think you guys have covered it pretty well. I am delighted to see Crash Test Dummies on your list STip, but I might have chosen "man I feel like a woman" from Shania - what an intro!
But if it is the music that represents the 90's where of where is the song that started the decade off. You heard blaring from the telly screen several times a day, from the radio, and at every flippin dinner party you went to. Yes i am referring to Mr Pavarotti kindly reminding us that as much as we may like to, "none shall sleep" while he's around and Italy were in the competition, and they were still playing it four years later (probably because the American theme was so rubbish).
And I must say CLag that love it or hate it (and personally give me two bottles of wine and Knebworth up at full volume and I'll sing every word - while I'm waiting for the scene where the girlies get their tits out for Robbie(I know, sad but what the hell - life is short enough)) but where is that 90's icon - ANGELS.
And even sadder but every year we buy one calendar only for the office - no Scottish scenes, no golf courses, no - that calendar salutes the showgirl from Oz - Kylie, again how can any list that measures the decade ignore her ..... (does anyone still have a copy of her advert for Agent Provocateur? - the one with her on the bucking bronco).
Finally I might add a personal liking for the best stage show I saw in the 90's and that is M People - stunning sexy music (unlike Chris Rea's show Zzzzzzzzzzz)
But I am off to see the Saw Doctors again shortly - not pivotal stuff perhaps but brilliant lyrics.
The mid part of the decade saw us buy a small holding and here we hosted three young farmers dances - lads I cannot recommend them highly enough! So for a wee while there was some pretty mindlessless dance music wafting around here. cotton eye Joe, itzi bitzi teeny weeny, and a song about a willy (STip will remember it). Great fun!

You got me stumped there PAT - "song about a willy" ?......My-Ding-A-Ling ?? Great Balls of Fire?? Nob On Wood?? Pricky Woman ?? Nice One Cyril by cockerel Chorus?? .........or was it something by Belle End & Sebastian or Wang Chung ?? Don't tell me..........let me think about it unless, of course, any other forum members can hazard an intelligent guess. Perhaps a packet of Johnnies for the correct answer ?? On the subject of Robbie, Millennium would just get it over Angels for me - like REALLY get it !! GOT IT !! - its A P enis by Ken Dodd. "A p enis, a p enis, the greatest gift that I possess. I thank the lord that I've been blessed with more than my share of a p enis"...........c'mon - it must be that !! your aye STip

PAT - Just back from the river. Didn't fish. Just sat on the bank and hurled a volley of unsolicited 'instructions' at a friend new to the pool. Gave the "willy" thing further thought.............is it one of the following? Willy Don't Be A Hero - Paperlace Little Willy - Sweet Back To My Roots - Sister Sledge Nobbin All Over The World - Quo Pump It Up - Elvis C Meat Is Murder - Morrisey Slip Sliding Away - Paul Simon......getting desperate as you can see.

Excellent stuff Sinkingtip but why didn't you mention those other 90.s hits
Spice Girls - Wannawilly Elton John - Candle in the willy Gloria Estefan - coming out of the dark Jason Donavon - any willy will do or anything by the Red hot Willy Peppers.......
Sinkingtip, it is rare to have you beaten but I have searched the house and found the vinyl copy of this fantastic dance record (1995 if I remember) which was.......
and you'll kick yourself when I tell you........
20 Fingers with Short Dick Man. (Radio One and the BBC had it remixed to sing short short man - clearly the Beeb felt a sense of inadequacy!).
