I would say both the tay and tummel have both excellent fly water but not having fished the spey or tweed hard to compare but they are on my to do list for next season along with catching a 20 pounder.

Don't want to sound daft but.....Ericht, Mar/April/May, with water, gives you fish and beautiful fly water. And has anybody fished Downie Park on the South Esk?? The Thurso is great I believe but it's just a big burn; for me that diminishes it's undoubted quality.

Other rivers may offer superb fly water in places but the Spey from Grantown to the sea (50 miles??) is unbeatable.

A couple of points: The Spey is high on my list of "must fish" rivers. Never did when living close by, the Dee was on my doorstep . Looking again at the tweed site I have probably underestimated the volume of fish caught by "non-member" fisheries, about 2,500 in 1995. So getting back to the point of the thread in the first place maybe Tweed will be top in terms of rod catches afterall.

Usually just lurk but feel i have to put in a post on this issue of SPEY VERSUS TWEED on good fly fishing water. Having fished over half the spey beats including all of tulcan, castle grant, ect on countless!! occasions. And great fly water it has. The middle beats of the tweed drybrough, upper & lower Merton ect, Has fly water to die for!!!And MORE!!! IMPORTANTLY has fresh fish ALL year round not like the spey which in MY OPINION!! Could close after July!!So give me tulcan A, OR B.from march till end June throw in polwick for my nite time sea trout ,AND the rest of the season on the middle tweed AND i,l retire t,morrow!!P.s just because wading the spey is not for the faint hearted don't make the mistake of thinking its the best. a mans river yes!! and i,v waded lots of it for more than 30 yrs and i,m only five foot four regards SUNNY

Sunny, Have you fished the Lower Spey in August September? The Upper Spey, Tulchan, Castle Grant etc do get a bit quiet after July but the lower river still fishes well.
Middle beats of the Tweed in June/ July? the catches are not that great, and seem to average 6 or so for the month.

Yes nice beat, on the right bank so your left hand up speycasting needs to be good ( or doublespey) Reasonable catches definately improving Peter is a great guy. Only compliant it is slightly over rodded in some conditions. There are vacancies at Wester Elchies check out Fishspey.

craigellachie has anyone fished this beat ?[/quote]fished there in sept ,although the fish were all coloured,it was the most enjoyable fishing ive experienced, great water and surroundings, peter&hamish top blokes, would die to get on apr/may,i fish the tweed a fair bit,but the spey is tops just for the fly water alone,if i had the money id be there as often as i could,i ll keep dreaming......

Thanks for the responses , I'm a lefthander so a right bank would suit, Wester Elchies only has vacancies in late August and September , I fancied June /July .It sounds like a beat that is on the up, I now have to decide whther it is worth £12,000 for a rod in July (plus £200 service charge )

Willie do you think it is worth booking any of the march rods? Last year week 5 fished well, at £50 /day it is not expensive, I should be fishing it.

Craigellachie Having fished it a few times now, would agree with all the comments so far, you tend to get what you pay for as they say! But it's a great location, the ghillies are top notch, and catches are improving relative to the numbers of capable/fit fly fishers now booking or owning timeshare weeks.

i would like to meet you so what days should i book? Not Thursday, bit difficult as I have to wait for an invite, I usually get one but cannot always rely on other people generosity.
