Thanks Malcom - see what you mean about LH up casting then!

If this is the left bank then, ie the water is flowing out of the picture not into it, with the bank as it is, would I be right in thinking a single spey off the right shoulder would be as good if not better than a double off the left, particularly for those with a slightly "stronger" right side, where the "D" could be formed parallel and switched on the punch ?
Whilst I've fished the Spey on a number of beats, I can't claim to have been here before - just my reading of the photo. Perhaps I should book up to test the theory, or can anyone advise who has fished the pool before ?

Altmor - malcom said it was the right bank - but it does look from the photo that the water is flowing out of the picture.
Or perhaps we should both get our eyes tested!

It is the right bank, the water is flowing out of the picture towards the Upper Slabs. Hamish is looking upstream.
It is a very deep pool with a cliff and as with all these big deep pools with cliffs the water does very strange things, I've seen fish jumping sideways as the current is running at right angles to the banks.

Thanks WG, that helps but I think I'll go and get the eyes (re)tested anyway. Now ... where did I put those specs ?
If Hamish is looking upstream, and he is on the right bank, does that not mean then the river is flowing into the picture ?

Thanks PB, As an aside, how do you post up a pic showing the pic on the thread, without having to go through a host link ? It could be simpler in the future.

Yes that's right Potbelly - flowing into the picture, or out of the picture, depending on your point of view.

Saw a programme the other week which featured the "Electric Brae" in Ayrshire. It's a section road that appears to run slightly downhill, but which is in fact on an uphill gradient. I guess it's an optical illusion caused by the surrounding topography.
This photo of the Spey made me think of it!

Hello to you all, thought I'd introduce myself and this seems as good a place as any, being possibly relevant to my question which is: Is this beat close to the Aberlour beat? I have a week of fishing there in late April. Does anyone know the beat at all? I've not done much salmon fishing before and never on the Spey (Annan and Nith last year) so any advice to help me catch my first bar of silver would be much appreciated. Dan.
