Chris,
Unfortunately, for years, we also have suffered from the ignorance of the impact of commercial operations in the catchment areas. However, money talks and to a certain degree some continuation of the economic advantages of commercial operations taking priority over the protection of natural resources is inevitable. Protection of the fish and the fishing is easier in areas where there are good runs of fish and the angling brings a lot of money to the local area. However, it is harder to shout loud enough in less famous salmon fishing areas, where we are too often classed as a pest to economic developments. All we can do is keep shouting and try to get support from other groups affected by commercial interests having an adverse impact on water courses and the environment in general. It helps if we can form voluntary groups to, at least, repair/limit the damage caused. Forming a good relationship with journalists sympathetic to the cause also helps, as does finding a local politician with an interest in raising awareness of the issues.
