Watch the tides, prey for rain. Curse Hugo Graeser who has spoilt the Madman , Ford and Rawlen.

had a couple of fish that time of year a few years ago -and lost a couple - the gillie, donald, swore by a size 12 selectafly allys shrimp in orange - and it worked - frustrating as they woudlnt touch my home tied offerings - but the cheap shop bought fly worked well - the colours must have been just right. A little water would definately help.

Malcolm , could you expand on watching the tide ?Graesser will get cursed when I see what hes done . Jan were those flys long tailed or shorts ,think I will be trying a silkcut pig ,it seems an illogical development !

i'll send you a picture - just the standard selectafly jobs, fairly short tails about an inch from memory - orange, a quite flat orange colour too - not bright flouro. i'll hunt one out.
i seem to recall donald telling me that the fish ran through 'x' hours after high water - but i cant recall what 'x' was - malcolm is bound to know - maybe 1-2 hours on the lower river?
i had a salmon on a silk cut pig on the spey last september, and lost one - so they work

The fish come up to the bridge with the tide then run the river. The rate depends on the water height, the higher the water the quicker they run. at +4" give them 4 hours to the Ford or what passes for the Ford these days. at +8" a height to die for about 2 hours.
