Thanks Stoater, Thought I might have exposed myself as a mad scientist with such a suggestion, but the more I think about it, it's a simple cost effective solution, that has nature's backing. Can't fail on paper but as I say wondered if there has been any research into "seal scarecrows". Your also right - I recall reading somewhere - but not in any research document that the "smell/scent" of a killer whale will also send Mr Seal packing. It's how to maintain the scent in water (flow) that posed a challenge to my thoughts, hence the visual and audible deterrent.

There is a commercially available device available which emits pulses or noises that deter seals form entering estuaries. I don't have the details, but I'm sure a few google attempts would uncover it. Would the scent, sound, and sight of a killer whale scarecrow scare the salmon and sea-trout? I think that they use acoustic deterent devices to scare seals away from fish farms.

Just done a google on "commercially available device - emits pulses or noises" Came back with "waterproof 303 enfield, substitute bullets for pulses and "bang" for noise". ;D Cheers Gary, Altmor

Nothing like a .22 rifle can't handle to remove those salmon hungry beasts.

Nothing like a 2.2 rifle can't handle to remove those salmon hungry beasts. .22 is too light for seals you need something with more clout.

If Shamoo and family moved into the Tay Estuary do you think it would drive all the seals up the river. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the pod did turn up. Could just see it with some of the blokes who fish Riverside in Dundee when a huge black fin cruises by the wall. ;D Hornet

Some years ago Stirling university did some research into underwater sonic deterrents. The most successful prototype was a composite recording of Maggie Thatcher mixed with a Wurlitzer organ.
