I enjoyed your story Jim and share the sentiment, but I must comment on your photo. Pleased though I am that you returned the fish, I feel that adorning him with your fly for the purposes of vanity does you no credit at all, nor does it illustrate any respect for your quarry. I think the comparison with Malcolms snatched shot of his Spey "springer" says it all.
I'm really not trying to start an argument about this but I do feel strongly about this sort of photography. Dare I say it he's a cracking fish though.

Isn't the hook still in the scissors and the tube has just came away? Looks to me that its more the way the fish was landed, rather than decorated. I see no harm myself in a nice picture for the album if the fish is handled and returned carefully. Ive seen pathetic attempts to tail and release, without taking them out of the water that have caused significant stress to a fish. Surely its down to the care of handling, I don't see that grassy bank doing any harm. IMO Thank you Springer. Got it in one. I literally tailed the fish onto the bank ,supported by both hands, the rod having been thrown on the bank) and that is exactly how the fly was, the double still in the lip. Quick photo, unhooked & the fish was swimming away before it knew what had happened. I dont think robmason has got over a previous post when I indirectly called him a "miserable sassenach". On reflection I was bang on with the assessment. It's nickpickers like him that are liable to prevent members from posting. You Springer on the other hand have proved in many ways that you are a true brother of the angle and your support of this forum and its members is greatly appreciated. You are welcome to share my rod anytime.

Jim, what a lovely fish and I really liked how you caught your second. I walked Carlogie last year when the water was quite high and I know the part of the pool you are taking about. Well done!!
Like your taste in books. I use my books for reference every year, sometimes for ideas or information other times just for pleasure and great stories. Just on that point. There used to be a magazine published called the Atlantic Salmon Review. I have most of them. One contributor was a guy called Nat Reid. He used to publish articles in there called "Nat's Diaries"......loved all his stories, events and his descriptive details.
As for the photo shot....don't have an issue with that at all. How else can you take a quick snap when you are on your own.

On reflection I think my previous comments where a little hasty, so I'm sorry if any offence was caused. That doesn't alter my feelings about "trophy" shots however.

OK Jim, I found it. Nothing better to do than read your last 100 posts. What can I say, it's an honour to be insulted by you. But then again how was I to know that you hijack every thread with a "trophy" fish!
Topper!

Nat Reid is a big mate of Bill Currie... they have fished together in some really remote locations. I've heard a lot about him from Bill but have never met Nat. Thanks also to the other members who have posted kind words. Tight lines to you all !

Great fish Jim. I've got Francis Grant's book and it's excellent. Sorry to hear he is no longer with us, I didn't know this. He died in 2004 aged 46. I can't remember what the condition was called but his heart literally burst. Apparently it is a rare condition which can afflict tall slim people. I think Francis was 6' 5" or thereby. The sad thing was he was planning a trip to the Yokanga that year because he knew his time was limited as the condition had been diagnosed. He never made it. A friend of mine was building a rod for Francis' Russian trip & that's how I heard about his death. By all accounts he was some fisher. One of the Ballogie rods who used to fish with him in the eighties said no one wanted to fish a pool after him. He said " it was like fishing behind a trawler !" . He left the legacy of a great book. Full of great advice and I've taken a lot of fish on that Drowned Mouse pattern of his.
