STROOD
Generally speaking, the slower the water the more square your cast but if it is fast water you should cast more down-stream
If that makes any sense. ;D

I feel a 'Gunn-esque' post coming on..... can't help it so I'll bite Soooooo, what does this chap 'Wright' do with his casting thats different? Nice to know he has an interest in Hardy tackle with an 'angel' though With that off my chest...... AAs' advice is sound. I still cast too square though

Hamish, you've been 'gunned' down. What next?
In relation to water speed and in addition to what AA says, also alter fly size. ie. In good water you can still cast squarish, but use a bigger fly. Pays to vary angle of cast, and fly size and depth.

There's an article in this month's Fly Fishing and Fly Tying magazine about this very topic.
Hamish, if you're going to "WG" Strood please note that your "thats" should read "that's" and your AAs' should read AA's.
I'm off to take cover...

.... fair comment - but I did say 'esque' Yes, you did. I guess if we all went on about spelling and punctuation there would be little time or space for fishing

STROOD
There is a lot of piss taking on this site but nine times out of ten its all in good fun. I should know I have been the brunt of it too (dare I say it) once you get established and get to know the guys there not all bad.
Just look out for the coppers, the nutters, jailbirds and the educationally challenged ;D ;D ;D

Dave, Looking back at my post that has upset you so I can see (if you are of a delicate nature) then it would be possible for you to get hot under the collar. Obviously my use of the various 'smilies' in my post was lost on you as there was nothing personal in it. Evidently my humour is lost on you, no great loss to me however. I'd desist from the personal attacks as you have done in your most recent post and the PM I received this morning, it's unbecoming someone of your maturity and it's less than friendly - a quality you are looking for in this forum I believe. Stop looking for personal attacks when there are none

I'm interested to see if any more good advice comes of this thread. I had some tuition yesterday and had my first go at spey and double spey casting. I found that when double spey casting in a fast flow, I had more time to sort out any mistakes (with a mend or two) if I cast more squarely. I think more practice would help but first impressions and all that..
macd, it could have been the border or yorkshire "esque" ;D

Dave/Strood, You've been out three days on the Dee, had six kelts on the fly and had some fun in the process. I think if you can catch kelts you'll catch fresh fish just as easily; simple rules apply, like don't spook the fish and keep your fly in front of their neb as long as possible. It strikes me you must already be doing this. Lucky you on the Dee
