Like many of our members, I find the simple act of trying to catch any fish irresistible, but for many years preferred river trout fishing but, since it combined stealth, delicacy and a greater range of availability. However, over the years, I have come to prefer salmon fishing above even seatrout, which may be even more challenging and, pound for pound, probably eat and fight better! So why is this?
For me it is the fact that we probably know less about what makes a salmon 'take' than any other species and it is the sheer unpredictability which makes it so exciting. When fishing for other species we are usually relying upon the feeding desire and we therefore try to utilise this, however, in general, this does not seem to be the reason why salmon take. It is also interesting to note that there are often very specific periods when salmon in a particular river will 'come on the take', when several fish from different beats will be caught within roughly the same spread of as couple of hours but these will vary from day to day. My only hope is that we never learn too much about these variables, for it would not only spoil my enjoyment, but deter me from fishing at the wrong time and in the wrong place with the wrong fly and coming home with the fish which makes salmon fishing so special!

I guess for me it goes back to when I was about 5 or 6 years old. My uncle took me fishing on the Earn and his friend caught a fish of about 16lbs which was not much smaller than me at that age. I stared at the fish for the rest of the day and just couldn't get to grips with the size and beauty of it. I have done just about every type of fishing over the years and enjoyed them all but fishing for the "king of fish" just has an attraction that is unmatched by any other type of fishing. Yes its frustrating at times and can be very very expensive but not much beats spey casting like a god all day on your favorite stretch of water especially when the reel goes zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
