Thought i would share this with you. I netted a big fish at Park on the river Dee today. The fish was 39 1/2 inches long and fat as a pig, covered in sealice. The lucky angler was Irish/Moy legend Robert Gillespie of fly tying and humungous distance casting fame.Incidentally Robert took part in a casting competition in Londonderry this weekend and only managed 57 yards. He said he came nowhere and had to get practising,i believe one of the Carron teams fine casters/anglers Gordon Armstrong won the event with a cast over 64 yards, wow. I said to Robert that if he could cast 50 yards plus he would cover some lies in the pool that we havent been covering and he duly did with his shooting head system and connected with this clonker, what a result. He also picked up a more modest 7 pounder later in the day.I offered my hand for handshake and hearty congratulations and said to him when i returned the fish, whilst shaking his hand "welcome to Royal Deeside Robert" I think his smile reached Ireland as it was his biggest fish by quite a long way.Hope to have the pic on Fishdee website in the next few days.It is a beautiful fish. That fine angler Ian Neale of Speycaster.net thought it looked bigger than 25 lbs when he looked at the pics tonight.I just thought it was a picture of pure magnificence and was deelighted to see it swim away safely, hopefully to make it to the redds later this autumn.

Sloggi,
Are you fishing Sluie on Saturday (17th March) ?
The reason I ask is that I have booked 2 rods for this Saturday and Robert didn't mention any other rods were fishing this weekend.
See you there

Hes in the legion tonight with the fishers who have lower Crathes for the week. I am sure they will be toasting his good fortune and admiring the pictures of the fish. He's over with Granville from the Foxford fishery.Bet he's still grinning and his wee 7 lber late in the day is the icing on the cake for him. ;D

Sloggi,
I suppose it all depends on water height on the day but I've been fortunate that the water height has been roughly the same each of the 4 times I've fished this season.
The set-up thats worked for me is the Carron Internediate with a 10ft fast sink tip and a 1 1/2" tube (copper/Alu) depending on the depth/speed of the pool.
This is the set-up that has assisted me in landing my two springers so far. Fingers crossed that the run continues this weekend.
As for Sluie, I was informed that it fishes best in a low water, therefore I'm praying that we get no rain this week with little snow melt.

looking forward to seeing the pix, sounds like a 'cracker' as we would say in Ireland ;D Robert and Granville are both great guys and well worth contacting if you are in the West of Ireland I was at the show in Derry on the Sunday and heard Robert was away fishing. From what I hear Gordon won the comp with a new world record of 69 yrds . cheers E

You are right the friends of Park wall is filling very nicely now but more fresh fish captured and fimed would help. There are a lot of fish motoring through the beat today and its exasperating seeing them splashing about all around the place but ignoring flies at all levels and sizes and speeds.Someone is going to have a big day on the Dee tomorrow.I think may be Robbie Harpers beat or above him.
