I think that a couple more casts would be the norm, unless there are no other anglers working down behind you. Like you say, if you cannot tempt it to have another go, all you will do is put the fish down with repeated casting. However, if you know the fish is resting in a lie, after you have worked your way down a bit it sometimes induces a take if you throw an upstream cast and retrieve the line quickly. This, of course, depends on how close the other anglers are to you.
Often on heavily fished waters anglers are recluctant to move from a fish that has shown an interest for fear that someone else will catch it. For most of us, this kind of desperate behaviour subsides as we become older and more experienced anglers. For some, it is the way that they will always be and no amount of preaching about ettiquette will amend their unsporting behaviour.

Great story Dennis! I'll let you fish through... nae bother! If only i had a spare £700?!? maybe next year! As for the Nith at Dumfries??? Its a nightmare. I stayed in Dumfries for two years when i was at college and it was mobbed... every weekend.... every evening, I've seen punch-up's there before too!! The things some folks do to catch a Salmon!
