Scottyboy,
Sounds like you were fishing at up at Dunkeld - below the bridge is the Dunkeld House water, above it I think is called Upper Dunkeld.

i no exactly where you were as i happen to fish that beat every year and have done so since i was 16, , you do nead a ticket to fish for trout and if Colin the gillie would have spotted you he would have motared right accross the river and asked for the bit of paper, it does get a hammering that spot by all and sundery as it is right on the bridge and you'd be amazed the stories colin tells me each year, anyway you where o.k as you had the said bit of paper!!!I think the beat is called dal;guise, or upper dunkeld and ive been told that it is the longest beat on the Tay, it is a brilliant beat and we stay in the bungaloe every year which overlooks the entire beat, fantastic!! the beat is directly above the Dunkeld house hotel beat which is very pituresque.

Hi Speers - the water you refer to is not Dalguise. It is known as Upper Dunkeld or, traditionally, Dalmarnock. Dalguise is the next beat up.

Good luck when you go - it's a great beat with 2 very helpful ghillies and a good chance of a fish. For F***S sake don't go and fish early!!!!! Turn up a wee bit before 9 and see how it goes later.

I'd agree, although the temptation is to get up and fish early, if the rules state 9 til 5, and you are only on for the day, you really shouldn't fish through all the pools before the other guests get there. Turn up early, and set up all your gear, so that your ready before 9am. Dennis and Gary will suggest where each angler starts on the beats, but ultimately try to make sure everybody is happy with where they are starting. It will be lunch at one and then a swap-over from top to bottom beat and vice versa. If it's worth fishing later and Dennis and Gary are comfortable with that, there might be a chance to fish on after 5pm. Listen to the ghillies advice on this beat; they know the beat well. Most of all, if they say don't wade past your ankles, don't be tempted to ignore them. There are a lot of lies close to the bank, where you would not expect fish to linger. The very best bit of advice I can give you is... don't catch them all, I'm fishing it the following day Enjoy your day.

Sage advice from Donnie W Off course, I'm sure that any weekly guests on beat rotation would understand fully that a day rod was so enthusiastic in his desire to get fishing that he chose to come up early and give their alloted pools a good rappalaing before breakfast!

yes i,d defernately aggree with the above; there is nothing that will get a gillies goat than disobeying the rules before you have even met the guy to do the hand shake with him for the intro's.And the same applies for the wading always fish in close on the tay for starters, their are lies sometimes right under your feet. regards Dalmarnock, hey sinktip do you fish this beat??? Oh and i thought the beat began with a D yes i stand corrected years of never calling it by it's name , just are we fishing the Tay again this year sort of made me get forgetfull. Dalmarnock, yep thats the one, it's one of the beats that dosen't do any reporting on fish catches to fishtay web site. Anyway good luck for the fishing, the Tay will amaze you with it's powerand beauty. regards speers

Scotty,
Dennis and Gary will no doubt give you excellent advice on the day. Take your trout fly rod, for if the conditions are not in favour for the Salmon, there are some cracking trout between the croys on the lower beat; real trophy fish. I've kicked myself on my last couple of visits that I did not set the trout rod up. There is plenty of good fly water for salmon and sea trout.

Take the fly rod as well - you don't have to use it but if you want any help with casting then you couldn't be in better hands.

You had better hope that his fishing techniques are better than his spelling, otherwise you are in for a long day
