Flicked through a copy of the FFFT mag in WHS today and saw an excellent article on the Thurso by MacD.
Well done Ross, it was an interesting read.

Well said Elwyman. Haven't seen the article yet but look forward to reading it. If he writes as well as he ties a salmon fly well he's pretty damn special.I think he is one of the most exciting and innovative fly tyers in Scotland today and it gave me great pleasure to see a group of Dee fishers trying his wonderful patterns on the river today. All the best Macd you deserve credit where its due lad. ;D

Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it. An easy piece to write as it is a very special place.....which just screwed me once again. Just back from 2 day visit. Caught the sun and some midge bites. And nothing else . As I wrote, "...a cruel mistress". Cant wait to go back. Ross

Ross It was a great trip Ross, really enjoyed seeing the Beats first hand after reading your article. As you say 1 - 0 to the river on this occassion ;D here's a wee pix from Beat 10 looking down to Beat 9, as you can see the good weather (for sun bathing) was not ideal for fishing, at least though it kept the migies at bay most of the time Its a beautiful river and would love to go back and try and make it honours even ;D

This is a complete aside to Macd's excellent article, but what is that thing doing there (not there last time I was on the banks of this river not all that long ago). In ten years time even the most biggotted enviromentally friendly (eh?) Beardy Weirdy is going to turn round and say oh God what have we done. It's bad enough the Flow Country being planted en masse with useless conifer block, but fart farms. Please stop this vandalism of our unique wilderness now. CLaG

Their only real function is to keep the midges aff ;D
CLaG, you are quite right.
they are a sore point for many thurso regulars- especially if they have travelled far to get away from it all. Easky's pic shows them from upper bt10 but they are directly opposite you at the hut on bt9. Constant hum reminds me of being in an airport and breaks the tranquility of fishing down some lovely fly water.

There are plenty more where they come from too. It's called progress I believe !. God help us,common sense didn't. I agree entirely, and yes there are plenty more on the way in Wales. As well as being a blot on the landscape, some of these windfarms are going to be sited on upland peat bogs. I've heard that one site alone will have 75km (yes, seventy five kilometres!) of stone access roads built through the peat bogs. God knows what this will do to the bog - if they destroy the water retention properties of these bogs we'll be getting more flash floods in rivers like the Dovey and Dee, damaging redds and making for poorer fishing in general. Peat bogs actually store carbon dioxide, so green power could actually increase net carbon emissions if things aren't done properly. Put the things out to sea I say! I shouldn't complain really, we've just won a contract to identify the best routes for transporting the 55m long loads to site.
