We have just launched a massive project which is aiming at evaluating with a view to enhancing 1017 miles of the rivers Lyon Lochay & Dochart in the Tay's headwaters (springer territory). It will be mentioned on Radio Scotland's news thoughout today and should be featuring in tonights Reporting Scotland at 6.30pm. This is a hugely significant project which is aimed at maximising wild smolt output. I'll put a link up soon to the project document. Jock Monteith Here's the link to the Tay Western Catchments Project Document: www.scottishnativewoods.org.uk/index.asp?pg=25Regards Jock

I know this is only the end of the beginning of all the work you have been doing and want to do, but well done WTG. As the proverb recalled at the start of the Water Margin: 'So may one just man become an army' CLaG

Hopefully all your efforts will pay off in the long term and we will see the stocks of fish start to increase. What a shame the hydro board are trying to get an exemption to EU directives following their scandalous treatment of the Garry.I could only gasp when i heard the power they generate from the hydro work could be produced by 4 wind turbines.Think at times people who create such environmental damage need to have their profits bloody hoovered if only to help the local environment.Usual story though Jock the biggest threat to salmon, as well as countless other animals is mankind itself.

SSE are only doing what is in their own interests, and in some ways you cant blame them for this if they can get away with it. In the Western Catchments, we will be trying to make a rounded argument that takes in hydro-issues in the bigger environmental and economic picture of those glens. We need to take that argument to a higher strategic level, and acheive changes there that would encourage and reward the hydro companies for taking a slightly different approach. I dont see any value in jumping up and down with a big stick myself. A degree of sophistication is called for here. If 4 more wind turbines will get water back in the Garry, some-one in government has got to deliver a mechanism for bringing that about. Hydro-electric will do this if that mechanism is right. Victor Clements

For the next wee while I am out and about raising money for this habitat project. Many riparian owners, the Tay Ghillies Association and businessmen in the area have promised or already donated cash. There's already a substantial dent been put in the survey costs of 73K including personal donations from myself and CLaG. If there are any other forum members who would like to play a part in this hugely significant project please send me a pm. Until the link goes up I can email the project document to anyone who's keen to assist Many thanks Jock Monteith

Donations received from CLaG, Greenbanks and Madkeen. Thank you gentlemen. These donations from ghillies and fishermen are very encouraging, shows there is a definite grass-roots appetite for projects like this. Money is accumlating quickly, even at this early stage. Jock is doing a first class job.

Robbie has listed tackle for sale in Classifieds, with all cheques being directed to this project. Obviously, we would encourage anyone considering doing the same to go for it. Very ggod way of spreading the word, getting people involved and getting a home for some of your old kit. All these bits and pieces add up.......
Contact Lock or myself if you require further details/ info.

With reference to previous post, two of the three items listed for sale in Classifieds were sold in just a couple of days, and seemingly at a good price. So, if you would like to clear out any old reels etc, give some-one else a go with them and contribute to this project, this seems to be a very good way of doing it. Just put "All proceeds donated to Tay Western Catchments Project", in bright red, at the bottom of your post, as Robbie did. PM me if you are doing this, instruct buyers to send cheque here direct, I will confirm arrival of cheque so you can forward goods, and we will send you certifcate and letter of thanks, and acknowledge your contribution in project report, which will be widely distributed to all who might want a copy.
Hopefully in next day or so we will have our website set up to take project document which tells you a lot more about project. I will put link on here when it is ready.
Regards,
VC
