A great fly. Landed 3 and lost two more in 90 minutes in the Carron Pool on the Carron Beat last Tuesday, all on a size 6 cascade. It lost its tinsel after about ten fish had grabbed it but it carried on catching with just a black body.

Where abouts in the Carron pool? There were quite a few fish showing off the croy/point about 80yards below the neck when i was there at the end of April. Cascade - only had one fish on them but a pretty good one at 23lbs

At 3ft 1 in the morning I had all of the fish from a soft pocket just below the croy below the houses . The best at 12lb took in a place that was five feet onto the bank by Thursday. I had another one that evening in the neck but the water had dropped a bit by then.
It was a great week. I hooked and played 19 salmon and three sea trout, although 12 salmon came off including 7 of the last nine, which was getting a tad old by saturday night.. I also lost a really big fish in the sands on Monday at 4ft something and rising fast. It jumped three times in front of me and the ghillie before heading to Delmunach at speed and pinging off. It was well into the high teens at least. I then went up and despite the fact that the river had risen ten inches in the hour we had been fishing and was pushing five feet, I then landed a nice 3.5 pound sea trout.

Best fly there is. Try copper body and purple wing, using red rather than orange.

At 3ft 1 in the morning I had all of the fish from a soft pocket just below the croy below the houses . Did you find yourself inconvenienced by the lupins? Ref the original question, thinking back I can't remember landing a salmon on a Cascade, though I had my best sea trout (about 9lbs) on one a couple of years ago on the Beauly and I do also remember losing a fish on one on the Spey the year before. Because they seem to be the first choice for so many people, I tend to opt for something slightly different - partly out of perversity and partly in a faint belief that there might be some slight benefit in showing the fish something else. But in all honesty the fly I tend to use when everyone else is using Cascades (a Moy Thunderflash) is so similar in overall colouration that I doubt a fish would really differentiate. Still, it's a confidence thing. If nobody else was fishing Cascades, I'd happily use one - I have plenty in my boxes and I like the fly. But while they are as ubiquitous as they are currently, I just prefer to use something else - it makes for slightly more interesting reading in the record book, if nothing else!

Charlie, There is some insider knowledge here! No, I personally was not inconvenienced although I believe that there are one or two strongly held views around. I certainly wouldn't use the 'L' word anywhere near the Carron hut myself...

While i have had fish on the cascade, its not ny first choice, as rps i prefer a wullie gunn (gold) ,or stoats tail type editor, water high and its a junction shrimp, that depending on the clarity of the water, spring i'll opt for a tosh, saying that i caught my first salmon many moons ago on an allys,,,,and it took a while to have the guts and go try something else.

To take this thread in a different direc tion. If you were on the Clags Desert Island Flies radio show and were only alowed 3 flies and 2 full lines on your Desert Island that had a river with the characteristics of Middle tweed, what would they be?
