I've been trying a few new patterns this year. I've been tying a few variations of the Willie Gunn, as well as Black Yellow and Silver flies in various guises.
The Cascade in larger sizes and tubes seems to be the fly on the Tay so far this year.
I thought I'd throw this one out to everybody. What is your favourite all round spring pattern - Willie Gunn, Yellow Allies, Black and Yellow, Tosh, Silver Allies, Cascade, Ness C etc. etc.?

Gold bodied Willie Gunn with JC cheeks - in other words, the same as Graham's choice except with a bit of extra orange hair.

Macd,
I tie tubes in both styles. Every year I start the season the same by tying too many variations of flies and all this does is give me a headache whenever I have to choose a fly.
Mainly if I fish a willie gunn it will be with the hair tied all around but sparse. I don't use a hair stacker either as I think this makes the fly too neat and hinders movement.
Other patterns I tie in both fashions, all around and top and bottom. I do like the look of a tube fly with a longer than normal wing on top and a shorter wing on the bottom.

Funny you should say that juniorspey, as I've just came back from the vice after tying 3 gold bodied willie gunns and two temple dog style cascades Fishing Cargill on the Tay this Saturday, so fingers crossed.

Graham,
Do you tie your Templedogs with coneheads or without? Have tied up some TDs on plastic tubes with and without cones for the Dee in April. They look great in the vise but whether the salmon like them, who knows?

Woburn,
I won't answer for Graham, but will let you know what I do.
Unless you are using fast sinking lines I would avoid tying tube flies on unweighted plastic tubes. Sometimes in faster flows they can skate on the surface, and they can also take a while to sink even when using a fast sinking line. An aluminium tube can give that little extra weight that will help the fly under the surface, while still retaining good movement in the water.
I like to tie templedog style tubes with various weights of conehead. This is achieved by using different sized coneheads and different materials. I really like the tugsten beads as they have a good weight to size ratio.
TD's can also be tied with a few beads stacked down tube lining as the body of the fly. This way a few beads can add a lot of weight without ending up with an overly long fly. When stacking the beads you can also add a hackle between each one to give the fly a nice 'shrimpy' look.
Once you have tied a few flies in various weights of coneheads, you should be covered for more situations.

Thanks guys.
Looks like I'll be fixing coneheads onto the plastic tubes.
Under what circumstances do you use each version? Or is it just another variation to try when other things arent working?

Unfortunately no I was on the Craig that week.
I was just on the Boat pool for the Saturday morning, Malcolm was on earlier in the week but it was just too high for him.
Mind, from the Boat you get a great view of some 'expert' spey casting, thanks to you both for that, it was a revelation to us average guys.
We will be there again this year w/c 19/6/06, look forward to a chat if it coincides with your day

Very well, right place right time for once.
We had 20 odd for the week between 4 of us, with almost as many briefly attached!
Nice that it all comes together once in a while!
