About 14 years old. Between Toonacurragh and Adragool where the river Corrib flows out of Lough Corrib. I was bank-fishing for brown trout. Someone I met handed me his 14ft fly rod when I asked him what the difference between casting that and my 9'6" single hander trout rod was. After about 5 woeful casts I hooked into and played an absolute beast which he estimated was about 17lb. As I only had a trout license I gave him the fish and scuttled off with a huge smile on my smig.
My son just got his first on July25th at 7years old on a flying 'C'. A 6lb grilse on the Camel. I'll post the photo once I get hold of it.

First ever salmon was caught on a Mepps on the Falstone beat of the North Tyne on my first ever attempt at salmon fishing. Fish took the moment the Mepps hit the water and was as black as coal!
That was enough to see me hooked and spending some hard earned on my first salmon fly outfit.
First fly caught salmon was taken in September the following season. After being fishless for 7 months I was starting to realise that this salmon fishing lark was not quite as easy as I first thought!
Broke my duck with two typical Tyne sea trout - about 4lb each, on consecutive days at Merryshields. This was a massive lift and the following week I had my first fly caught salmon, a fish of about 12lb and sparkling, taken on my last cast after fishing down the Railway Wall on the Fed beat of the main Tyne.
Can still remember the 'bloody hell' feeling as it took off on its first run. Sat shaking for a good half an hour afterwards.
Happy days!!!

My first fish was caught at Coupar Grange on the Isla in late July 2001. I was 14 and it was taken on a sz 14 stoats tail trebble, floating line. The fish had snubbed the ally's shrimp but was splashing regularly, so determined not to give up i offered it the stoat. The old man was snoozing on the bank, but when i hooked it and the reel screemed, boy did he jump up.
A cople of years later I took my first springer out of the exact same lie, although in slightly less glorious fashion, on the yellow flying C.
