Well done to Iain on his first fish.
I was trying to work out my average for the amount of times( not hours) I went fishing against my hooking a fish including sea-trout ( no pulls- but on for a while or landed). Varies year to year but what is YOUR average- --- a fish every 3rd, 4th, 5th ,6th etc time you go fishing???

Last season was not a very typical one for me. I only fished my local water about 4 times for sea trout and 6 for salmon due to lack of water and time. I had 2 pulls while out at night for the sea trout and hooked, landed and returned both of them. When salmon fishing I had a pull every time I went out and hooked them all but only landed 1 out of 7 which was a 10lb bar of silver so I invited it to my house for tea. I usually have to put far more fishing effort in to get this many takes and hook ups but I would normally land about 70%.
Frustrating at times but good fun all the same.
I did better fishing away from home last year with Approx 17 days fishing for 13 salmon & grilse.

1.5 Salmon a day??? thats loads!! Since moving to Blairgowrie... i think i've fished maybe 80 hours over 5years for Salmon... either by spinner or 10ft trout fly rod..... no takes...no pulls and no lost fish!! bugger! But now i've got the right tackle and rod.... and all you guys to assist im planning on bringing that down!! well it surely cant get much worse! and if it does i'll stick with river trout fishing!

Graham I have been salmon fishing for 6 years now and I am no where near your last years total. You are either a sh1t hot fisherman or fishing some great water but I expect that its both.

I worked my average out for 2005 as approximately 50 full days, with 36 salmon/grilse and 8 seatrout netted.

Managed 60 last year and would imagine it averaged at around one to one and a half fish per day.
We are lucky up in the North, in that we have rivers that fish well at different times of the year. The moriston early on, the Oich in late spring and the ness through summer and autumn. I think the key to having a good average is fishing the right water at the right time of the year and it is not necessarily the case that you have fish the most expensive waters to achieve success.

My batting average is abysmal but the fun is just being out fishing 300 days a year.
Remember no Sunday fishing in Sctland so that is 365 minus 52 313 possible fishing days.

It helps when you are on the river 6 days a week and the place is full of fish. Up the Brora bettered the 10 casts a fish with 2 in two casts then a third on the 10th cast. Will probably go a month without catching another fish knowing good old salmo salar.
Come to think of it I didn't see you average for last year, must be pretty good!!

Last year was great with about 60 sessions (most days/nights, but some for an hour here or there) on the river which resulted in 23 salmon and 35 sea trout.
so far this season i've had 9 days on the river and so far have seen just one fresh fish...and that was in my brothers net!

Graham,
How do you manage to get 73 full days fishing?
Even if I fished every Saturday (I do fish almost all of them) and used all my holiday entitlement on fishing, 73 days is still above my limit.

Graham - Lucky you! I like my rods in the recomended number of pieces and would, therefore, not risk telling my wife and kids that all my holidays and cash are tied up with fishing.

Fruin
I thought the whole idea of holidays was to get away from the wife and kids and go fishing.

It helps fishing rivers south of the border when you can get a full weekend in as well!

Acw, I know what you mean. My local rivers have relatively poor returns. I have had 5 fish in a day and averaged over 2 a visit in one month, but this is very rare and I can go months without a fresh fish. I long for the days when I can fish decent water, at the right times of the year, on a regular basis but I too have sons. However, it will be a long time before they take me fishing, my oldest is 4, my youngest 1, and I have another on the way this summer I'll be making sure that I have no more after that!!! Still, fishing days are like whisky - there is no such thing as a bad one, just some that are exceptionally good.
