Hi Guy's, There has just been a huge cock salmon caught on Dochfour beat of the River Ness this afternoon,it was returned unharmed to the river, i've been told it has been photographed and measured accurately it measured 56 inches long and 50 inches around the girth,at this stage the ghillies have been in touch with Pitlochry to try and work out it's size ,but this fish seemingly measures 2 inches longed then the current British record of 64lb,and Ness fish are as deep as Tay fish so we could at this stage be looking possable at a new record,if i hear anything else i'll let you know, Scott Mackenzie

I have just spoken to one of the fishing party - fish is 52" long (same as record) and 40" girth (record was 28") . Estimates 65-70lb. Plenty of photos taken. Jones

Photos, show us photos! If the measurements are true, the fish will be at least sixty- something pounds!

Hi Scott,
Great news and lets hope the scales can confirm it.
Not so sure John if you let it by in August - think it was the "A-Team" in September. ;D ;D
What a day - Scotland win at football and the possibility of a new Scottish rod caught salmon record.
Keep us posted Scott, and all the photos you want.
Cheers,
Altmor.

Sturdy scale says:
girth (inches) X girth (inches) X length (inches) all divided by 800 = weight of fish in pounds.
using length 56", girth 40":
40 x 40 x 56 divided by 800 = 112 pounds!!!!
or with 52" length
40 x 40 X 52 divided by 800 = 104 pounds!!!
either of above, if accurate, would be a World record!
Accurate & verifiable length, girth, vs some definitive known sized object, as well as photos (some fish scales) would be needed to record a new Brit Record methinks.

Possibly not. Think I would have made sure it had been at weighed in a net before it went back. I can't imagine a British record can be logged as an estimate Some fish though

Does it matter if it is recognised as a record by the body responsible for keeping tabs on carp and catfish? In these days of catch and release if a fish is photographed and measured so that groups of experienced fishers like the forums can approve the fish, should that not be enough?. If I see a photo of this fish and it looks as big as the measurements suggest ( I hope we will get some agreement on the measurements!) I would be happy to accept it as a record, or at least as one of the biggest salmon caught anywhere on earth in the last forty years...
If any forum member should catch a whopper though, it would be handy to scrape a few scales off to confirm number of sea winters and maybe check genetics to confirm whether the fish was native or a badly lost Alta fish..

Possibly not. Think I would have made sure it had been at weighed in a net before it went back. I can't imagine a British record can be logged as an estimate Some fish though In order to claim a record, there was no need to kill the fish but it had to be accurately weighed, then have the scales checked by the weights and measures. Then call the helpful fossil at the British Record Claims office.......... No accurate weight, no record. But who cares, well done to whoever caught the fish!

It is nice to see that the big fish are still there to be caught! Well done to the person who caught this monster. Lets hope that if the fish is caught again that it is returned to fight another day. Every man abd his dog will be out trying to get this one.

Let's hope that such a magnificent fish survives the capture ordeal now that it has been returned, and manages to complete its spawning task.
A re-capture within the very short time left to fish on the Ness would almost certainly be doom for the fish.
Well done to the captor, and huge credit to have the fish returned.
Even if someone had fishing weigh scales at the river, it sounds as if it may have bottomed out those scales anyway.
Verifiable scales for such huge specimens usually come from butchers premises!
