Just back from the Easky,
Know of about twenty six fish taken today, all bar one on the fly. John McLaughlin of Lough Swilly Flies doing well with about six fish when I last saw him, all on his Eany Tailfire.
My two guests, both newcomers to salmon angling had seven on the fly of which I had the opportunity to hook two for them in difficult places. Not bad for newcomers to salmon angling who learned to Spey cast with a single hand rod this morning, using a sinking braided leader too. They had great sport as did everyone else.
One of the fish I took was an absolute cracking take, he came in and showed in a glide. The place was overgrown and difficult with overhanging branches, unable to wade and a longish throw was required into squally wind. Cast went right, started to draw the line with some slow hand lining to stop the fly going to far down the glide. Up came a fast following bow wave in the smooth glide and a savage turn away with the fly, everything locked solid and he exploded out of the water. Class take, handed the rod to the guest who eventually landed the seven and a quarter pounder, straight up from the sea. A take that should have been on video. We got one on orange and gold shrimp and six on the McCormick's shrimp all No 8's.
River is full of fresh fish. Good riddance drift netting.

sounds like a great day's fishing, a very beautiful and productive river Its hard to beat at this time of year, if you get the water you will get fish I had planned to fish it with Macd last week but switched to plan B when it didn't look like the conditions were going to be right , still we got fish so not all bad. I should be down again so hopefully I will bump into you as you say good riddance to the nets

Had a message from Granville Nesbitt, Fishery Manager of the Fortland Fishery on the Easky. They had 58 fish yesterday all on fly, most released. Will get more details shortly. The river is full of fresh fish.
Of course I missed the day due to other commitments.

Luckily for me i was right on the spot on the right day ;D - managed 11 lost another 5 and missed another 5 . A cracking day all round. However although some fresh run fish were caught the majority had been in the system prior to that spate.
