Hi All I am going on my first trip north of the border next month to the above location. I am currently using a Loop Quattro Tip spey line - would this be ok to use or should I go for a line with a longer head? If so, floater/intermediate? Any advice/feedback appreciated on tackle/location

I hope that I'm not teaching my granny to suck eggs with this reply...
The Spey at Fochabers is quite wide and for maximum water coverage you would require a long cast.
A longer head will only allow you to cast further if you are a proficient caster. As they are slimmer in profile it will also provide a more delicate presentation, but only if you are a good caster.
If you reckon that you can handle the longer head length then go for it, but not if you will be casting the line into a heap and thrashing the surface. If you are casting a reasonable distance with the Loop line then you will be more comfortable fishing with it and ultimately enjoy your fishing better. A lot of fish can be covered effectively with shorter casts.
If you have never cast one of the longer head spey lines before but are adamant that you want one, then get one and practice with it before your trip. Also, take the shorter head with you on your trip to ensure that your fishing is not ruined should conditions make casting the long belly line difficult.

Great advice from Fruin as usual - i bought a 65ft head IG line as an upgrade to a 55ft head Rio Windcutter and I am hoping it helps me out but if I am wrong I have wasted another £40. The whole thing is pretty risky isnt it and mistakes are not cheap.
I am going to book my annual speycasting refresher tuition soon - that is the best money spent IMHO.

Many thanks Fruin. I would class myself as an average caster and I have tried a few different lines. If I did get another line, would you recommend a floater and perhaps the use of polyleaders or a full intermediate/sinktip? I use a Partridge 15ft #11/12.

If you want to keep costs to a minimum I would go with a floater with a range of polyleaders. If you are going to use polyleaders in excess of 10ft, then you will probably be more comfortable casting a spey line of 65ft or less. If cost is not a significant limitation, then more lines can be beneficial when you need a range of options. However, unless you encounter very high water in May, there should be little need for a full sinking line. I like to have a fast sinking line, an intermediate, a floating line, a range of shooting heads, and a selection of polyleaders of various lengths and sink rates. Bear in mind that this is for fishing from January to October and occasionally into Novemeber. If you are fishing from late spring through the summer, the floating line and polyleaders will cover you for all but the most unseasonal conditions.
