New tubes for tying ???

i got a nice selction of these- they are fairly heavy for the size.

I've yet to try these tubes, but read through this site a while ago while doing a search for "Jurij Shumakov" after seeing some of his flies elsewhere.

The design is similar to the loop bottle tubes except neater heads can be acheived as the wing is tied onto the plastic inner sleeve.

tackletrade has good prices. makes them himself i think

skittle tube (tackle trade)- forgive the colour scheme red bull and vodka inspired

the fly is tied on the liner.

burr the end of liner. insert into tube. mount on a needle.

make sure a few cm of line is exposed at the head.

tie as normal. trim liner and melt to burr the end

I already do a similar thing with bodies made up of coneheads. Thurso Dog colour scheme?

Sort of Fruin, i would normally use kingfisher blue. It was a practice one. The blue was on it for weeks. I added the rest last night...Thurso bound the morn'!!

Shumacov,I believe is in Scotland the noo,fished on the Spey and Dee and is on the North Esk today/tomorrow .I have no idea on which beats. Perhaps the "jungle drums" will tell us !

Yuri Shumakov stayed here in the borders on Saturday March 4th, he fished Commonty on Dee Monday and Tuesday and Park South Wednesday. He fished just a few hours on North Esk.

His report is as follows ;

My fishing was good and I can't complain because of weather. First day was very cold and were forced to wait until lunch when ice flakes desappeared from surface. I landed on Commonty beat 3 kelts and lost 1 fresh fish. I lost another really good fish together with fly and landed kelt on Park beat. All on LR tube flies. Vittorio, guy I fished with on Park landed 9 kelts on LR tube flies. Great experience!:-))

On N.Esk I fished just a couple of hours and had no fish, but Kinnaber beat is very impressive indeed. We had nice lunch with Martin Stansfeld (owner of the beat) and Murray Stewart (my internet friend who arranged that fishing

Well I followed everybody's notions and bought some Shumakov style tubes and tied a few for the Tay on Saturday, I'll probably end up tying a few more before Saturday...





A wee bit fiddly but worth the effort.

I'll be fishing Kercock. I know that Dennis has had you out for casting practice before. Have you tried Kercock yet?

I've only had casting practice at Kercock with Dennis about six weeks ago.... but i really enjoyed it! He's a good teacher..... but im sure i've picked up plenty of bad habits since then! Kercock is on my to do list......Im going to try and get a fish on the Ericht (where i have a season ticket) first but if that fails then i might book a day on Kercock...... although i will probably book a day just to get out! I think April or May might be best for me....... and i'm stopping in on Dennis tonight to give him back his rod and reel that he kindly lent me! Then tomorrow i'm going on the Ericht for a half day.... so im looking forward to that! Good luck at Kercock anyway! John.

I am just having a bash at my first few bottle tubes and I hope someone with more experience of them may be able to answer some questions.

When tying the wing on bottle tubes do you tie the artic fox hair forward first and then double back as on a templedog?

Is there no need to put a hackle behind the wing to hold it away from the hook?

Are these flies a bare bottle tube together with a hair and mobile wing, hackle in front and JC cheeks?

fruin put this link up- you will find step by step instructions, great site.

In the flies shown here the tying is made on the tube liner. The tube itself is shaped like a skittle and keeps the wing up and away from the tube. If I do fold the wing I only do so with the over-wing and usually on a standard cylinder tube.

The folded wing on TDs was originally done as they were made on standard tubes. These new ones, particlarly where the tying is on the liner, make this less critical.

Tying on the liner is easy: cut a length, burr one end with a flame and insert. Leave a few cm poking out at the head. Mount the tube on a needle and dress the fly.

Trim the the liner and burr with a flame and you are in business.


A good way of cheating on standard tubes is to tie in some flash material and trim quite short, stick the wing on and it is kept up by the flash………

There is no fixed method, so play around with it until you are happy- try the conventional way first of all
