Tackle advice for a novice

It all depends on how much candy you have to play with.

For a good solid kit id would go with the following.

Rod - 15ft Bruce and walker Norway.

Reel - system 2 (not the best of reels, but good enough to get started with)

Line - Carron 65ft head.

For a cheap option on the rod and reel go to ebay for a scout about.

It's not all about GTI whizz bang turbo go faster rocket launcher rods and lines. Most of the pools I fish aren't 65feet long!
So for smaller rivers how about,

An eleven foot 7/8 single hander.

A wf 7 or 8 intermediate line.

Any reel that will hold the line and 150yrds of backing.

Half a dozen Ally's shrimps, some temple dogs and a few small silver stoats.

And most importantly of all an effective rain dance!
