We have had these sea birds around for about a month now, certainly long enough to starve to death, picked a dead one up today and it was just bone covered with feathers. It also seems like a heron is killing them too. We have found two which appeared to have been killed by a heron, one early last week with the complete top of its head pecked away and another which appeared to have been speared, both birds found in almost the same spot and the heron took off from there a minute or so earlier.there are definitely more of them this year and they first appeared about three years ago in numbers whereas previously I'd see the occasional one or two over the years. Anybody else seen this on their rivers.? We are about fortyish miles from the sea by river. No rings found on their legs so far to trace their origins

Saw an item on BBC Scotland news tonight about huge numbers being found dead on rivers well inland.Suggested there was some serious problem out at sea causing this.Don,t know enough about it,but is this connected in some way to the amount of painfully thin salmon turning up in our rivers?
Cheers

it seems that there is a lack of sandeels in the north and east, years of overfishing by the danes,to make food for plastic salmon. jim

The Danes get a lot of stick over the sandeel situation, however, the problem can be aimed much closer to home. Many years ago the Shetlanders were having boats built in Norway which were 39ft long so as they avoided the the 40ft length where catch limits were set, that meant they could catch as much as they wanted and NO quota limits, their target at that time of year was sandeels. The sandeels were destined for the fishmeal factory on the island of Bressay. Believe me there was a steady stream of boats most of which were very low in the water loaded with sandeels heading for the factory and it would'nt be just Shetlanders either. Now of course, there is a lot of shouting about the starving sea birds around Shetland. Short memories..................
