Before i start, i know i'm very late in asking this. I'm treating my brother to a day on a river in the spring. Looking at about £50 each as a rough budget, although I'm willing to up this a wee bit. I fancy the Tweed myself but i wonder what other options there are? I've done virtually all of my salmon fishing from late spring onwards so i'm kind of lost. Would greatly appreciate some help!

What month are you thinking about, and where would you be prepared to travel?

If you enjoy canal fishing by all means go to te Tweed, but if you want to fish a river with a decent current come North and fish the Spey. Early spring the Dee out fishes the Spey, Feburary and March but by April the Spey is the place to be.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. The Spey sounds good to me!

Also think of the Ness system if you are wanting early spring fish. The loch and tributaries- Moriston, Oich and Garry can be good. Bit hit and miss these days.
The moriston is a good bet, but there is always a doubt or two about the hydro generation. some lovely springers are taken every year.

Upper Hendersyde on the Tweed in May can be great sport - check through Strutt and Parker (agents) though as it's normally snapped up quick. Location and budget would suit your requirements if available, with a good chance of a fish or two.

The moriston is a good bet, it is £25 per day from jan thru to the end of feb, £50 from then until the end of may when it closes. given water it fishes extremely well and there are some fantastic springers in the 8-20lb range, many of which are sea-liced. the estury beat allows fly fishing or spinning, with fish falling to both meathods from day 1!!!!
