Are there any good runs of salmon this early in the season in the south east / west of England? Is there anywhere to be recommended for a day or two chasing salmon in this area of the country at this time of year?
Any help appreciated

Quite an encouraging little graph lets hope it keeps going in a positive direction.
I remember an article in T&S that illustrated the collapse of the Wye's catches. It dropped from a year of over 6,000 fish to less than a thousand within a few years. Very worrying and a sad story.

I believe the Tamar gets a few, and even the Hampshire Avon usually gets some in April/May. Emphasis being on 'few' though....

The Taw probably has the best Spring run of the Devon rivers. I think they have sold off a good bit of their fishing but take a look at this: www.risingsuninn.com/index.html

Where is the best (salmon) fly water on the Wye?

Rob, as ever it depends! The most productive throughout a season is below Monmouth. I have fished Bigsweir at the very bottom of the river, just above Tintern. It has a good mix of fly and spinning water.

The Wye is a very long river, salmon are caught well over a hundred miles from the sea and there is good fly water to be had in places along the whole length. The best catches are made near the tide these days since the river drops so quickly. But the fly fishing is not the best down there.
If we get a wet April and May, the best fishing will be on the upper river above Glasbury. This is (nearly) all good fly water and with the added bonus of beautiful scenery and good trout and grayling water. The Wye Foundation booking office has access to some very good water at reasonable cost. They will also give you good advice on your chances.
